Over the summer I picked up two tins of 5.45 x 39 Russian ammo from AIM surplus during the 1 cent shipping sale. I’m very pleased with the ammo, and yes its still much cheaper than 7.62 x 39. I know its “corrosive” but I do clean my rifle after each range trip so no need to discuss that in this thread.
* What I wanted to mention is the two tins came with the original Russian wooden crate, which I didn’t realize would be so cool.
a) its historical and neat from a collector’s point of view
b) it makes storing and transporting the tins much easier (wooden grips on each side)
I included some pics below. You can just imagine stacks of these 5.45 crates in Afghanistan or Chechnya, ready to feed bakelite magazines.
I also wanted to mention the positive experience I had with AIM. I had a credit card issue, and my first order didn’t go through (due to my own CC company putting a hold on my card). AIM proactively contacted me and resolved it very professionally- very good customer service! You can order with confidence from AIM.
