PLEASE HELP! Rust on Remington 870 Barrel

I just ordered a Remington 870 express barrel off of this site from a fellow gun enthusiast. The barrel was brand new from Remington, even with the tag still on it. I am not sure if the surface rust came from the package sitting outside my door all day on a really cold day or if the rust was there and I didnt notice it. The rust is very small and only surface rust but you can see it between each gap on the rib on top. I want to remove this rust, but I am afraid to use very fine steel wool as I do not want to take off any finish. Any ideas?

Clean the crap out of it with cotton patchs, Nito solvent, and Q-Tips.

It may just be bluing salts residue & preservative oil left over from when they made it.

It looks like rust, but really isn't.

0000 (4 zero) steel wool and and gentle rubbing with plenty of gun oil. Won't hurt the finish and works great on surface rust.

+1 on the 0000 XF steel wool & oil.
It is harmless on bluing if used with a lick of common sense.

The surface rust came off the barrel okay but now I cannot figure out how to get it out of the grooves on the very top of the barrel. Remington's new vent rib barrels have a series of "slats" on the very top of the barrel and I can see rust spots in their. I am so frustrated because I tried the steel wool and it wouldn't work and then I tried a tooth brush with Rem Oil which is what Remington recommended, but no success there either. ANY IDEAS?

Try a bronze brush first; if that doesn't help a steel one used carefully and with oil should do the job.

Both can be had from any decent hardware store.

You don't need a hardware store wire brush.
Especially a steel one!

Just use a bronze bore brush out of your cleaning kit & solvent.

I was thinking of mentioning that but using bore brushes that way tends to mess them up.

Plus, you get more leverage with those nice handles on a bronze (or steel) "toothbrush."

Yep!
Those little steel wire brushes from the hardware store are way hard on bluing!

The only thing I have found they are good for is cleaning old varnish out of stock checkering before you rechecker the damage they do.

Thanks for all the help- a 2nd call to Remington got me to the right guy who is sending me a shipping label and vowed to replace the barrel if necessary.
