hello all my icon is a blued gun I keep it wet down with CLP What is the best rust preventative and also a good coat if take out in wet to hunt

Long-Term Rustproofing

I found Cosmoline in a spray can. It's a fairly thick amber colored waxy coating that need solvent or hot water to get it off. It's like that amber colored wax stuff they use to rust proof cars. But, if you're storing for a long time, that's one thing that's going to be there a year or more. Most oils I've tried dissipate within six months to a year and parts begin to rust. Also, Mobil synthetic auto grease (in a tube) from Walmart works really good. I just put on rubber gloves and smear it all over the weapon and you can wipe it off with a rag. Oily spray and oil rags are great if you reapply every six months or so.

I get it out and wipe it down with CLP every couple of weeks I really like the gun Id just like to protect it.Deer season coming up soon,Id just like something to protect it if was damp or wet outside

I use car wax or Johnsons paste wax. You can use it on the wood as well as the metal. Think about it, if it will keep your car protected for a year outside, it will keep your gun protected for a long time. I take the action off and wax inside the stock as well.

I once saw a report that listed RIG and plain old WD-40 as the best rust prevention. The WD is for water displacement and I use it on long term storage non hunting guns. If you are hunting you have to worry about odor and WD-40 stinks. I use odorless silicon on my hunting guns. Just quick wipe with a rag and there will be an invisible film left behind. The stuff I use I bought for my treadmill and it is thick and odorless and has worked as well as anything for years. They also sell food grade silicon spray in kitchen supply stores, odorless inert and safe on guns.

Two light coats of Johnson's paste wax. Apply, let dry, polish, repeat.

Among oils this is hard to beat:

CLP Collector

(not the same as ordinary CLP)

EEZOX and CorrosionX are also good.

im am going to order some Eezox do you think I should try to trade for a stainless gun? or do you all think I can keep it protected

Eezox is one of the more toxic gun preservatives you will find. It contains trichloroethylene and gives many people headaches from the fumes, myself included. It is a great preservative but only slightly better than BF CLP or Corrosion X. I've run several corrosion tests of my own using various solutions to attempt rusting bare framing nails. The CLP you are currently using is a very good rust protector and nothing more is needed in wet environments. It takes several days of repeated salt spray to rust a nail treated with CLP so don't worry if you get rained on. Just wipe the gun dry and apply more CLP. It's more the fact that you're using something than what you use. A thin film is all that's required. Even after CLP carrier dries the protection is still there. I've tested it.

Eezox also contains chlorinated esters that are less than desireable on gun steels in some peoples opinion. I don't use it anymore since there are so many other products that work without the downsides.

thank you Horsemany I really like the gun.I always keep a film of CLP on outside and bore.I just wanted to be able to use it without it rusting why was considering trading it I use a spray can which seems a little lighter for the out side and a bottle of liquid for bore and bolt

I prefer CLP.

It will act as a rust preventative, but it is also a superb lubricant, so I can use it on all the internal parts without having to worry about the rust preventative turning to gunk if I shoot.

Boeshield T9 is supposed to be about as good as it gets for corrosion protection.

MP5 Metalophilic Oil will also work very well for that application. However, it should be noted that while Boeshield T9 is marketed as a lubricant, MP5 is more of a protectant than a lube and, in my opinion, shouldn't be relied upon to provide the same level of lubrication as one typically expects from a good CLP type product.
