S.C. Sheriff's Department Armored Vehicle with Belt-Fed Machine Gun

This is rediculous. We are becoming a police state. There is no need for one of these. If the departments are being handed enough money that they do not know what to do with, that's a big problem. I dont care what anyone says to try to justify this, it is obsurd.

Boo hiss~~~

Another WASTE of money case... sigh.

We are living in a POLICE STATE and I do not care what state you live in!

The war on terror is a big joke. Who are the REAL terrorists, eh?

The war on drugs is another BIGGER joke.

The sheep just swallow the Kool Aid on the R and L sides and they would make JIM JONES mighty proud! Freaking ___!

This seems like a good spot to post this picture.

What, couldn't they get a minigun?

Maybe their budget will increase next year so they can get that A-10 warthog. Great for strafing suspected drug dealer houses/neighborhoods with cannon fire.
At least there's the chance a great vid will come out of it all. "Now this is a Ma Deuce. Yall hear about troops in Iraq talkin about a Ma Deuce, well here it is. And I'm the only one in this room profeshnul enuf, that I know of, to operate a Ma Deuce." THUMP

"See how accidents happen. They can happen to you and you can be blown away. Now I'm sure you never wanna see guns again, but bring that mini gun out Brian."

Where is the proof?

HAS ANY ONE VARIFIED THAT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT ACTUALLY HAS THE M-2? It could have been there just for the benifit of the picture.
Disclaimer: I have not read every post on this thread so if it has already been posted I am unaware.

Eric:

From the first post:

The Richland County (S.C.) Sheriff's Department has acquired an armored personnel carrier complete with a turret-mounted .50-caliber belt-fed machine gun for its Special Response Team.

While I admit that it could be just for the pictures, it seems to imply that the M2 came with it.

My problem with this is that there seems to be no other resource for this story, I searched for local tv station news internet sources and other that the OP refrence there seems to be nothing. We all seem to be wraped up in this with absolutly no varification. Ok what I mean is main stream credible news source.

They have pictures of it on their web site.

I think it is a great idea! Why? Because of the same answers I have seen literally a dozen times on this site: Because they can :)

Study your history, folks. LE and private security firms e.g. the Pinks have used heavy weapons before. Why do you think so many podunk PD's had tommy guns and BAR's to sell off in the 80's and 90's? They always want these toys and all that changes is the excuse for why. Today it's drug dealers, in the past it was anarchists or commies or striking workers or robbers like Dillinger and the Barrow gang.
Start by reading about the Homestead Massacre and Matewan. I, for one, am deeply suspicious of cops with belt-fed weapons.

I'll tell you what they are really doing with this thing and the .50 cal --- deer hunting. :)

Civilian Bradley fighting vehicle

I wish they would drive that thing down the road to Sumter, SC, and park in my front yard. I could use a break, time to do some maintenance, reload, clear the fields of fire:D.

As a person that has lived in Richland County (stationed at Jackson), I can attest to the fact that the sheriff does not screw around. He likes his toys (first agency to adopt the FN P90). He also likes big drug busts. I support this purchase if it keeps meth off the streets. I remember when my hometown (Ely, MN, also home to Jessica Biel-YOU'RE WELCOME!) purchased a Hummer H1 for the fire department as brush truck and what controversy that was. That H1 seems 50 times more responsible this APC!

As a Deputy for a Sheriff's Office that is contracted by the Forest Service for patrols, IF I was on such patrol, and found myself pinned down deer hunters inside a hardened position, impervious to sniper fire, I'd like a .50 on my side. Along with a mortar and a law rocket or two. I'd need to call in air strikes too; BUT NO NAPALM! I draw the line THERE. Enough is enough.

Hmmmmm. Maybe in northern Idaho... Gotta keep those pesky metric Canadians with thier play money that jams our soda machines at bay.
:D

Do they still have this APC???

Has it ever been put into service???

We need some links to articles where it was used successfully, ie. drug lab busts etc...:D:D:D

We need pics!!!!!!!

The cops could of used one of these in North Hollywood...

Any 11 year old Farm Kid with a single shot .22 Rifle, could have ended the 'North Hollywood' debacle from 200 yards...just fine...

I used to fancy myself a pretty good shot with my first 22; a Savage Model 72. Woodchucks at 100 yards is a little different than a moving human head at 200. I could not have done it, regardless of my ego.
