I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for...

I found this diagram and it doesn't help that much

http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp?chrMasterModel=1980z1000

I shot 2 rounds of trap today and found the gun wouldn't cycle properly or even extract and eject fully... I guess after 400 rounds the "black tar left over" when it was cleaned with solovent has melted the rubber washer in there and caused it to "gum up" quite a bit, still working on getting it all out.

What I need to know is how the gas piston goes back in? There's some what of a gas seal ring on it, just one, it's a real thin ring that looks as it acts as a seal from what I can tell. Does that seal go towords the top of the mag tube or does it go towards the bottom? Does anyone know? Will someone look at thiers for me?

The Smithy at the range didn't know, but said he thought it went towards the top... Right now it's installed towards the top and it's cycled 2 rounds correctly and the recoil is less than before.

I really like this gun, it's a great little trap gun, was inexpensive and is really "pretty", If a man who owns mostly tactical weapons can say such a word.

nobody has an answer to this? I know it's not that common of a gun, but I figured someone would give a reply after 24 hours

Been too long since I piddled with a 1000.

Hang on though, Mr. Nolden will catch this thread and I bet he knows and may even have a exploded parts diagram.

If not one of the moderators may either move this thread to his forum down below, or notify him.

Bullet Bob; thanks for the link for the search, I saw that thread and did a pretty good search already... I pretty much need someone who, either has a detailed manual or a S&W 1000 to tell me which way the gas piston is "supposed to go it".

The gun seems to fire with it either way, but I'd sure like to have it put back together properly. It's such an odd ball gun, but I just love her.

Took it to the range today and shot it, with the Gas Piston backwards from the way I bought it, less recoil, cycled perfectly... guess I'll find out Wednesday when the trap range opens if she'll eat a box of 25.

The collar is attached to the piston by a pin. The piston is installed with the holes for this pin toward the receiver. A search at brownells site will bring up an article in their gunsmithing section. Use 'mossberg 1000' for the search. The wire spring located at the bottom of the piston serves to keep the collar pin from walking side to side.

gunfish, thank you. Well upon putting the gun back together the other way, the pin is now securely in place while seated in the collar.

I promise not to take anything else apart, w/o takeing pictures of the disassembly.

So why did the gun function better when assembled backwards? With less recoil?
