I got a S&W model 17 in trade today and I was wondering if you guys can tell me when it was made and value.
It is P&R and the SN# is: K350070
Under that it says, MOD-17 with no dashes or numbers after it.

It has walnut target grips that I think are called Diamond grips because they have a diamond shape around the grip screw hole and they have a slight concave hollow where your right thumb would rest. TT, TH, etc. There is a screw at the front of the trigger gaurd that my M-19 doesn't have and the ejector rod is not shrouded at all except at the very front where it locks into the bbl.

Any info would be helpful because my Fjestad doesn't seem to have this gun. It says that this model was made between 1986-93 but the grips look older and it is P&R. I thought that S&W stopped P&R on their guns in 1983?

It has no large scratches or damage but it does have some blue loss at the muzzel and around the cylender. I would rate it at about 85% give or take. The grips are in fine shape with no noticable chips or gouges, there are one or two small dents or rub marks but you need to look to see them.

I got it because I always wanted a K-22 Masterpiece and this was as close as I have seen for a good price. Also I have a S&W 19-5 with a 6" bbl and TT, TS, TH, etc. that I love and I thought this would make a great companion and training gun.

I paid about $355 with trade and cash. Did I do O.K.?

Your revolver was made in 1958 (not 68 or later). As for the price, I don't think you're hurting too bad. It's toward the top of the scale, but they don't make revolvers like that one anymore. .22's are generally priced higher then .38's in the same condition. If you remove the grips I think you'll find the gun's serial number on them. If so, they were hand-fitted to that particular revolver. It's little touches like this that make the cost worthwhile.

Checking further, the "-1" is supposed to have been introduced in 1959, but you're serial number should date sometime in late 1958. Whatever, I think you have one of the very first 17-1's. For $30.00 you can get a letter from S&W factory historian, Roy Jinks. It will detail the exact history of your gun. For details goto: www.smith-wesson.com

Since I traded a gun plus cash I only had to come up with $90. I don't think I did too badly considering how little they often give you on a trade.
