I'm thinking about buying a S&W 1911. How are the stock trigger and any problem with the external extractor?

The Smiths are gaining rave reviews from what I've read. I was impressed with the fullsize blued version I tried out. Very smooth shooting gun, great finish and smooth slide to frame fit. Trigger is a little heavy, and can be cleaned up.

Only thing is, S&W still has some asthetic problems. The rear sight shows a visible gap to the bottom of the sight to the slide, enough to completely bug me. They still have to clean up the muzzle crown also, all the ones I've seen still have some messy crown jobs.

Otherwise, it's good to go! S&W seemed to get the external extractor right, much more sucessful than Kimber's attempt.

S&W external extractor design is weak. Hilton Yam and George Smith along with several others have already pointed this out. It has the same failings as every other ill conceived 1911 external extractor design. Too high and too narrow to maintain control of the case after the barrel has linked down. At least it doesn't interfere with feeding as much as other external extractor designs although it does interfere with feeding more then the internal.

I have no idea how they got the reputation they did but I think it has something to do with the fact that most guns don't reach a high round count.

The swartz style firing pin safety goes out of time eventually. I'd pass and buy a Colt or Springfield.

I love my stainless steel, full sized version.

It is the most accurate out-of-the-box 1911 I've ever had, my others being Colt & Kimber.

1911's rule in my book, and my current crop of regular shooters (non-safe queens) come from Les Baer, Kimber and Smith & Wesson.

I believe the Smith is up over 6000 rounds now, could be 7000, but I don't have my tracking spreadsheet with me, and it's been 100% from day one.

I'm not finding anything weak on the Smith.

Always fires, always extracts, always ejects. New brass, range pickups that I reload, it eats and spits out it all.

I have three SW1911s. I bought each one used. I wasn't planning on ever buying one, but the deals were to good to pass up. I figured I would eventually trade them off. I did not like the external extractor, the beavertail fitting was poor, the gap under the fixed rear sight bugged me, and the pistols just did not appeal to me asthetically.

I shot each of them, and I had 100% reliability with each one, using different kinds of ammunition. The triggers were OK at first, but were improved with a little work and each now has a nice trigger. Two are range guns, and one, a SW1911PD, is in my carry gun line-up.

Have spent time with a couple of them and IMO they are a very nice gun.

If Tom Selleck likes them what more do you need;)
