S&W 22S ?

I need the rib that mounts to the barrel. Or do I the end where the rear sight is has a hook on it and mine is broke off but it shoots fine. It goes straight down at the end then has a hook that catches on the frame.
What does it do and do I need it at all. Just can't stand something that is broke is all,
