Local dealer has a S&W model 36 nickel with a 3" barrel in excellent condition. Box is not original. Says that it was made early 1980's. He is asking $335.00. Fair price, or not?

Not sure about the nickel, stainless would probably be in the market price, according to the ones running on the auctions. I just bought one for my daughter from my local dealer, not excellent, about VG-EXC, blue for $175. It had been carried under a car seat and one side of the cylinder had loss of color. I found a new yoke and cylinder on the Net for $45 delivered, making a nice looking gun for $220 That makes yours somewhere in the ball park if you like nickel.

A clean 3" nickle in my area will go 325 to 350 saw one begining of summer with real pearl grips go for over 400. with box . I think to much made of the paper and box stuff If I collected I wouldn't shoot and since I shoot, box and other junk go in trash were it was ment to go in first place. Now the old wood box that S&W had and some Colts had yes I would keep. Cardboard or plastic city dump.

I agree that some gun boxes and iterature really do belong at the "city dump" but considering the prices some musty old cardboard from S&W can bring I tend to hang on to gun boxes and stuff although I do admit to trashing some long gun boxes due to space considerations.

Resale tends to be better with all the gun stuff is included with the gun and I tend to like when the stuff comes with a used gun I buy. I figure it tends to mean the gun was not used much or at least the previous owner took care of the gun.

I will admit to treasuring a Norinco Chinese Makarov box with all the goodies as well as an original AR7 Armalite box but I got them with the guns, I didn't seek them out on ebay or anything like that.
