I found a s&w 25-2 45ACP manufactured 1975-76 modeled after the 1955 gun. The barrel is mismarked as 1950 and seller states only 1000 were made before correction was made and stamped 1955. Seller also states the gun is unfired and has been on display for many years and is VG-EXC condition. Asking $700. Seems too good a price to be true. What do the experts here think and what am I missing or should watch out for?

I remember that there was this oops in production but forget the exact details. I'm not sure what premium it brings.

Even so, N frame 45 caliber S&W's, 45 ACP or 45 Colt, are running in the $1000+ range in my area.

Thanks Chuck, My early research is telling me the mismarked barrel adds very little, if any, value. Also if in the condition the seller states it's a good price. Anyone else that wants to add their opinions, please do.

I'll agree a 45 cal N frame is a fantastic shooter at that price wether it's a collectable version or not.

I'd snap it up if I had the cash even though I already have a 625.

If it were lightly fired and marked 1955 it'd easily still be worth $700. The 1950 marking really doesn't add much to price.

I have to believe more than 1,000 were made but I base that purely on the number of them I've seen on GunBroker over the years. I bought a 1955 marked 25-2 a few years back for 650 (if memory serves) and I absolutely love it.

Just buy it, if you don't like it (which you will) you almost certainly can sell it for a profit.

Even without the mis-mark I'd snap that thing up since it's only $700.

BTW, I have a Colt Series 80 slide that is marked Series 70.

The seller was a scammer. I was suspicious of the add as being too good to be true for unfired gun especially after my contact with "seller." I originally found the gun doing a search of handguns for sale private in my state. After getting suspicious I ran a search of all states and the two adds appeared one under the other. The exact same gun, add, photo(1) , description and serial number was placed in two different states for $700 and $990. "Seller" told me in e-mail the gun was unfired which wasn't mentioned in the other add. Plus, the day the "seller" e-mailed me my server notified me someone had tried to hack into my e-mail account but was blocked. Both adds were listed by unregistered users. I won't trust unregistered users again. However I did find a nice 1968 Single Six 22LR on the same site for sale by FFL for a good price that I brought home Monday.

I am the moderator of our own THR Trading post. We have had 2 scam attempts by members who appeared to be regular guys and went through the time and posting requirements to earn the ability the Tading post. Turns out the were off shore scammers. Both were found out and banned.

I can only say be careful in internet sales..

One technique that works is to request a picture of the weapon with a clearly visible date of the local newspaper. Since most scammers dont have the weapon they will balk at this and try to downplay or berate the request.

As Sgt Easterhauss used to say, " be careful out there people."

I contacted Armslist and explained the situation in detail yesterday. Now, instead of two adds in different states for the gun, there are three. One add listed in ct for $700 unfired and one in California asking $1900 for the same serial # gun. Also one Colorado all the same photo.

Thanks for the update and for the info regarding the multiple listings scam artist. You can never be too careful when dealing with some internet sales.
