I finally got to shoot my 460 yesterday. If you are a handgun hunter, you really need to check one out.The recoil is really manageable,no worse than a hot load 44 mag, certainly nowhere near as rough as the 500 .The price is coming down on them too_One shop has them for $819.

damascusblade5, what was the gr. bullet of the 454 Casull and what was the gr. bullet of the 460 Mag? I could not tell the difference between my 460 Mag loaded with 240 and 260 gr. bullets in my 460 Mag, and to me even my 300 gr. 454 Casull loads had less recoil than the 200 gr. factory rounds. I guess it is all in how we perceive recoil. :D

460 S&W Magnum Ammo

Had anyone else had problems finding the Hornady SST 200 grain ammo for the 460 S&W? If anyone is looking for the ammo, Joes Pawn Shop in Alabama has it, reasonably priced and just received 10 boxes I ordered from him. Prompt and great service from him. You can contact his business at (256) 894-9994. Another source for bulk ammo is Load X and the pricing for the 460, 240XTP is $102 per 100 round pack. Can reach them at 707-579-0990. Haven't ordered from them but they do have it in stock.

Pistol Scope for 460 S&W Magnum

Looking for recommendations for a scope for the 460 S&W magnum, i.e. brand, type and optics.

A few comments on my experience w/ my .460. I've got the 8 3/8" barrel and have shot all three rounds thru it. I do see a difference between the .454's and the .460's. My wife can handle the .454's, but the .460's hurt her wrist and elbow. I've got some good video of her starting to flinch, stop, recover and then touch one off. Gotta love the trigger pull of this gun!!

I can find the Hornady's around here, and the expensive CorBon's. So I've got enough to shoot.

As far as a scope.... I've been pondering too. I'm thinking about a Burris 2-7 handgun scope, not sure of the exact model. But I liked the field of view and parralax view in it better than some of the more expensive scopes. Also, I'm looking at the Nikon (3000??something) red dot type. It's got a changeable dot size from 2 up to 10. Both are able to handle the recoil. And I'm still considering the mounts. I think there's a couple mounts/rings that are supposed to be better than most for the recoil.

But I'm like everyone else, I love this gun.

460 mounts and rings

A friend put me on to where the mounts and rings can be obtained. Have the mount and rings and waiting on the scope now to arrive. Awesome mount..stainless steel and fits like a glove. Takes 3 rings, at least that is what's recommended to handle the recoil. Check out www.jackweigand.com

When you call, he answers the phone..great person to deal with and excellent service. You can get a 20% discount on the rings when you buy the mount also. Also has them for other mag frame handguns.

djp57, I have 2 PC model 460 Mags. On one I have a Ultra-dot Match dot and on the other I have a Bushnell Trophy 2X6X32mm. They both work great and hold up to the 460 Mag. As a matter of fact I have the same set ups on my 500 Mags.

djp57 , I have not used 3 rings on my 500 Mags or my 460 Mags. My scopes have never moved. On one of my 500 Mags, I have well over 3000 rounds fired and the scope has not moved at all. :D

Good Info

Thanks for the info on the scope and rings. Think I will just try two rings and see how it goes. Three rings would not look right but will have a spare if I need it. Appreciate everyones feedback and sharing your experience.

What is everyone's view on a holster for a scoped 460 or 500 mag? Seem the bandolier type is the only one I've seen available for scoped handguns. They don't look very comfortable but then again, it's a big gun.

I use the bandolier holster for my 500 and 460 Mags. Such a big gun would be awkward on the hip in my opinion. :)

Reloading the 460

Anyone with experience on reloading dies for the 460 and 500? I've heard the carbide dies are preferred. I have RCBS equipment.

There is not any Carbide dies out yet for the 460 Mag. I am using the Hornady 460 Mag dies. You can get carbide dies for the 500 Mag, but I just use the RCBS dies. Even with the carbide dies for the 500 Mag, you may require a small amount of lube. I have heard of a lot of stuck cases.

Mount

I have a Weigand mount and Leupold scope on my 500,think I will try an Aimpont for the 460 since I plan to hunt with it

Reloading the 460

I have just put together 150 rounds of 460 mag w RCBS Carbide dies. Using Hornary brass, Hornady XTP 300 grain bullets and 40 grains of H110, it shoots GREAT. I am not using any lube when sizing the cases and have had no problems, the carbide dies are the only way to load.........Greg

RE:.460 Scope & Holster suggestion...

Aimpoint scope, hands down. S&W .460 holster, which can be ordered on the S&W website. Sleek, with NO VELCRO!

I would go with a Ultra-dot over the Aimpoint. I blew the dot out of my Aimpoint on the 5th shot on my 500 Mag. I was told by Aimpoint that it would not hold up to the 500 Mag and they replaced it. I sold it the day it came in. I have been using Ultra-dot's for over 4 years now, starting on my 454 Casull then on my 500 Mag. Well over 3000 of the 500 Mag rounds and about 2000 of the 44 Mags. The Ultra-dot is still going strong.

Ultra dot

Have no experience with the Ultra Dot. How does it do with targets out to 100 yards? Anyone tried a laser sight with a 460?

The Ultra-dot Match dot works great out to 100 yards plus. The dots on the Match dot are 2,4,6,and 8 MOA at 100 yards. I use the 2 for all my shooting. As far as a laser sight with a 460, I think they are better left for tactical handguns and not hunting handguns. In my opinion they are worthless for hunting. :D

The S&W website offers several different holsters for the 460, is it the leather or the nylon one you are referring to?

Just picked up one of the 7.5 inch PC 460's. I haven't gotten a chance to shoot it yet, but it's surprising well balanced and pointable for being such a big gun.

2nd the recommendation on the ultra-dot. I have a couple of them and they are very good.

:D atomchaser, is your 7.5 inch PC model the black with stainless cylinder? I have 2 of them. There are sequentially numbered and are both in the 1 of 500 Made. One wears a Match-dot from Ultra-dot and the other wears a Bushnell Trophy 2X6X32mm. I can consistently hit a 4 inch clay target at 150 yards with the 460 with the Bushnell scope on it. The one with the Ultra dot, I can hit it most of the time at 150 yards. I have worked up some good reloads that are very accurate in both guns. :D

Redhawk - Yes, I have the same model as yours. I've been pleasantly surprised that the factory ammo is not ridiculously expensive. I've found several places that have it for less than a dollar per round. Not a cheap gun for plinking by any stretch, but not so financially painful that you don't want to shoot it, either. I can't wait to get out and see how well it works on wild Florida piggies.

Hi, I'm new on here, so bear with me please.
My question is about the big magnum handguns...I plan a bowhunt in Alaska for caribou this year and wondering about a handgun for protection from bears...What one would you suggest...remember, that It must be kinda easy to carry......Thanks:confused:
