Just noticed the extractor pins are missing on my 586. It seems to function OK without them. Are they really needed ? Should I replace them ?

Yes you should, they affect more than just lining up the extractor and may cause you problems down the road. Smith may have them for a reasonable price and they are user installed rather easily.

Just got off the phone with S&W, excellent customer service. They are shipping the extractor pins at no cost ! Not a major expense item, the shipping probably costs more than the pins, but good service nonetheless.

It's a 586. I did compare it to a 686 way back when, couldn't see any mechanical differences. I believe the 686 is stainless and the 586 is blued or nickle. And, of course, the 686 is still in production.
