S&W 5906 jammed need help

The 'takedown pin' is the slide stop, you guys. Like a 1911.
You cannot remove it unless you withdraw the slide far enough back.
Just like a 1911.

Primitive as it sounds, a common method with these pistols
is to hold the slide firmly in your left hand,
and hit the back of the grip HARD with your right hand.
Repeat.

The idea is to hold the slide still and move the frame forward,
rather than pull the slide backward. The physics is the same.
You just get a better grip on it that way.

If broken parts are jamming it up, no expedient method will work.
If you're worried about damaging your gun, just take it to a gunsmith.
The pistol is worth proper handling and repair.

So what would a gunsmith do differently?
If broken parts jam the action, it can be disassembled
by sacrificing certain parts.

For instance, drilling out the slide stop from the left side
and drifting the slide stop pin to the right.

It would be risky for an owner (or any amateur gunsmith) to
try this on his/her own. Besides, Smith&Wesson makes
it difficult to get new parts. They usually require you
to send the gun to S&W and have the factory install
parts. Even simple parts, like the external extractor.
If you can't free the slide, best to get a gunsmith involved.

Yea thats what I figured too but I cant get any movement towards the notch to push the stop pin out. I think that Celticarmory may hav been right yesterday when he suggested the plungers under the rear sight assembly may be the culprit but I haven't had any luck beating the rear sight out of its dovetail yet but I am going to make another attempt right now, stay tuned!!

if you pull out all the pins in the frame that are on the right and left side of the frame right above the magwell area and the below the rear sight. This will allow all the back trigger sear and safety parts to fall out and relieve any pressure on the back end of the pistol. Only issue is that if you dont know how to put them back in you will need a smith to put it back together.

This is what a gun smith will do inorder to gain access to other parts of teh gun once the trigger, hammmer sear etc. are removed.

Nore you don't have to remove the trigger assembly, just the back half of the gun.

I did what CelticArmory suggested and removed the rear sight exposing two springs and two plungers after removing the left spring and nylon plunger as well as the right spring(the left right being the view from the rear of the pistol) the slide was freed up and the casing popped out easily. I was able then to field strip the pistol. there did not appear to be much obvious damage and I don't know caused the original problem. The only thing I noticed visually was a part called a firing pin safety latch Pt# 17 on their unrevised dwg. I also noted that the right plunger which sit in a little well and appears to hold the above mentioned part down until the trigger is pulled seems a little sticky which may indicate some damage or may have been the original problem. Just my uneducated guess. But anyhow I will have to further dismantle and inspect the parts in this area for other problems. I am not happy to hear that S&W is difficult to get parts from. I did see lists and from Brownells for parts but there are several revised lists and each on seems to have less parts available. Anyhow thanks to all for your help ane especially C A, I would have done what youi said Yesterday if I could have got the rear sight off !! Maybe somebody super- glued this pistol as it didn 't give up it;s secrets without a fight. LJR

If S&W does not have the parts I was told "Numrich 866-686-7424" has parts for everything. I have never ordered from them but did see their parts catalog which was maybe 4" thick and bigger than a phone book. Hope it helps.

S&W will only generally only sell small parts to factory certified armorers. They're worried that people will "fix" a gun incorrectly and cause a safety issue.

Thanks again for your help you were spot on with your thought that the problem was with the plunger(s) located under the rear sight. What I think happened that my have caused the original problem was that the tip of the firing pin safety lever broke, whick allowed it to get up on the side of the Firing pin safety Plunger which normally pushes down on this lever I noticed a small dent on the side of this plunger when removed. I think this is what caused the gun to jam initally. It doesn't look like a difficult fix assuming I can get the parts. Again thanks LJR
