I'm looking at a 5906 in excellent condition and just wanted some opinions.
Seems like a nice gun, not scratched up, clean and the grips look good.
Comes with a leather holster, 8 mags, 150 rounds of ammo and the box for $450
Deal or No Deal?

If it comes with all those extras and the gun is mint, it sounds like a fair price. They are excellant shooters of which I still have one. Used to carry it at work. By today's standards just a little heavy for its caliber.

That is a good deal. I absolutely LOVE this gun. Its super-light recoil with that big stainless frame. I would order a recoil spring from Brownells and replace that and call it good to go. They are excellent guns. The double-action trigger pull is very smooth and exhibits virtually no stacking along its travel, a fairly consistent 11#'s. The single action trigger is clean and crisp at 3#.

I paid $450 for a TSW model without any extra's just a few months ago. The TSW is a little harder to find. I think its a fair price and its a great gun.

Great range gun. Very pleasant to shoot and they typically run like a Swiss watch. Mine has eaten everything I've fed it without a hitch. If you don't want all the mags and holster, you can usually score good specimens with a single mag in the 300-350 range.

I'd echo the sentiments of others here. If it is in pristine shape and has 8 extra magazines, I'd jump on it. The 5906 is a rock solid service pistol if ever there was one.

I have two, one NIB and one that has seen lots of use but been given lots of good care. Looks darn near new.

Saving the NIB one for my son, so that when he asks about the "good old days" when all semi-auto pistols were made of steel, I can give it to him.

The 5906 is one of the best 9mm handguns ever produced, and almost certainly the toughest. If I could only keep one 9mm, it'd be my 5906 (over Berettas, Tanfoglios, Kahrs and everything else)

Fairly beat up police trade-ins with one mag will cost you $330 plus shipping and transfer. Used OE mags are about $25/ea, and the holster and ammo have a little value as well. You're basically paying ~$250 for the gun. BUY IT!

I think the 3rd generation Smith semi-auto's are quality handguns; with the additional magazines, and other extras the price sounds good to me-

My wife bought me an unfired 1989 5906 for Christmas. Its is a fantastic shooter. Very accurate and very low recoil. I liked enough that I bought a 3913 as my EDC. I plan on getting a 4566 or a 4516 for winter carry.

I was issued on brand new 5906 as a duty weapon. It was a fine gun for that. They are well made and very reliable. When we swapped to Glocks, I bought it and 3 mags for $180 bucks. I sold it a short time later and don't miss it a bit, though.

I don't have the 5906 but I do have the 6906. It belongs to my father but I do get to shoot it here and there and outright love it. Recoil is easy to manage and it is very accurate. Fella at the range shot it and proceeded to put 10 rounds into the 10 ring. Very happy about that.

I would personally buy it since it comes with all that. If you want to try cheaper, Go for it if not, I would still get it based on the 6906.

OEM mags go for around $33 a piece new. Aftermarket Mec Gar (the best aftermarket) mags go for around $20 to $25 new. OEM replacement grips are $20. 5906s are going all over for $300 to $375 depending on condition and supplier. So you do the math...but it sounds like a decent deal, especially if they're OEM mags.

Do a search on 5906s. Lots of info out there. Basically it will tell you that these things are overbuilt, over engineered, eats any ammo, including empty cases, will last forever or close to, has good combat accuracy, and extremely reliable BUT HEAVY!

BUT HEAVY!

Funny thing is, they're actually pretty dang close to other guns in the same class, like the Beretta 92FS, Sig P226, CZ-75 and Browning Hi-Power.

Google results, empty w/mag:

Beretta 92FS: 34 ounces
Sig P226: 34 ounces
Browning Hi-Power: 35 ounces
S&W 5906: 38 ounces
CZ-75: 39 ounces

My results, no mags:

Beretta 92FS: 30.5 ounces
S&W 5906: 33.2 Ounces
Baby Eagle FS 9mm: 36.0 ounces
Colt 1911 .45 (just because): 35.1 ounces

Thanks for the input
I think I'll offer him $400 and see if he takes it.
I mean I'd probably go $450, but if I can shave him down a bit, I will :D
It seems to shoot pretty nice
The trigger's a little different from what I'm used to shooting, (XD, Glock, etc) but I think once I get used to it it'll shoot good groups

Well, I bought it
This isn't a great picture, and the gun needs cleaned a little, but here it is.

Check prices at CDNN before you buy. It doesn't sound like a bad deal. I've heard they're great guns.

I heard exactly the opposite; that the CDNN guns were beat up and generally needed new grips. Just what I heard, never bought one from CDNN, just what I read on the S&W forum.

@ tuj

Look at the picture of my 5906 5 posts up.

It came from CDNN.

I don't think it looks all beat up.

And I've done nothing to it other than give it a good cleaning.

Shoots spot on.

If the mags are in as nice condition as your gun appears to be, you did quite well in my opinion. Have fun with that fine hunk of steel.

That is good price for good pistol. Actually it's pistol and hammer rolled into one. Love them those are undervalued just like ole' Ithaca pump guns.
