It would seem that I have subjected my 637 to strong solvents and the finish is flaking. What difference will it make if I continue to carry it? Does it really matter beyond cosmetics?

It is just a matter of looks.

I never could grasp the comcept of someone making a gun that wouldn't stand up to conventional gun clleaning materials.

If it was me, and I was worried about the looks, I'd send the gun out and have a real coating put on it.

But then again, as an ugly guy I never much worried about looks anyway.

An ugly dog can still be your best friend.

So what other "home fix options" exist here? (Besides sending it back to S&W for complete refinishing). Mine has finally just started the peeling trick - a little on the backstrap where it has suffered a ding or two.

I early on polished off all the finish from the barrel and cylinder with Flitz (Regular cleaning started the process, and I decided just to be done with it). These two parts are significantly easier to clean now and are shiny stainless - actually looks great with the finish off these parts in my opinion, and appears to have suffered no damage as a result.

But what if a guy were to flitz off all the finish from the frame? Would that also polish out to a nice clean chrome like finish? Would there be detriment to the material from not being protected other than a coat of oil now and then if stripped to that extreme point?

Just projecting into the future and exploring options. :) It's the primary carry piece, so functionality is first priority, but I don't necessarily mind if things look nice along the way either.

Pic attached as requested (I hope). Note: Just the cylinder and barrel have been polished. But curious about removing finish from frame too.

My 642 is currently back at S&W for a refinish. I've only had it for 2 months.

My wife's 317 is several years old and hasn't shown any signs of a problem. (It has been cleaned lots more than the 642 and with the same cleaners.)

I also have a used 637 that looks great. It's older than the 642 but what the previous owner did with it is unknown. (It may have been refinished.)

Again with the weird Smith M637 flaking finish... Skunk had a thread about this very thing almost a year ago... but I've had my 637 since '99 and haven't had any problems with the finish. I have to presume that S&W changed finish procedures somewhere along the line and apparently really screwed the pooch on the later models...

Have had one for almost two years now with no problems. To clean it I use Hoppes #9 and CLP. If I was to have a problem with it I would send it back to S&W. I think someone once posted that if you take the protective finish off of aluminum it turns.
