I just bought a new 637-2 this week and was just curious as if they have made any improvements on the clear-coat applied, for I haven't seen anyone post any complaint in a few years anywhere? I emailed S&W for any preservation tips (do's & don't's) but haven't got a reply.

I don't believe they apply the clear coat anymore, as it stripped easily and was unsightly. IIRC the frames are just hardcoat anodized.

Boy I sure hope so. I got her before I did any research, as I was really in the market for a 438, in which is hard anodized. Got home, and the first thing google popped up was a thread on this forum "637 Buyer Beware" lol. The guys piece was all scaley from cleaning products and normal wear...tad bit concerning lol. S&W did reply to my email late this afternoon recommending their cleaning products (should've seen that coming lol). Oh well, we'll see what happens. I did come across a 438 at the gun show, but I done checked this one out prior, and new the dealer personally, and really fell in love with this piece...pretty lol.

I have a 637-2 for CCW and it's peeling. Looks like hell, but functions perfect & is reliable... thats all that matters to me.

This is my third S&W revolver. My first was a 686 with a 8 something" barrel, I tradeded it off before I really new what I had lol. I was only 21 lol. My second I currenty own, 1905 HE 4th change made in 1940 (my baby), and this little 637. I now knew my ole' man was on to something when his primary piece is still an ole' 1903 HE .32 S&W Long that he got back in 68' lol.

with the metals that the 637 is made out of... I don't think it can be blued or parkerized, can it? Or would have to be something like duracoat or something?

XD - with a stainless cylinder and barrel, and aluminum alloy frame, you are correct that bluing, which is a controlled oxidation process applied to the surface of carbon steel, would be difficult if not impossible to apply to the gun.

Parkerization is a baked-on process, IIRC, so if you really wanted to, you could apply it to the gun, but I can't see why you would. If you just want the gun black, black anodize the frame and apply a black teflon coating to the stainless parts.

Or buy a 438.

I just have to wonder - the 638 isn't going to rust, so what's the point?

Six, I agree, whats the point of refinishing.... heck, for what that will cost, I could probably get another pistol. I'm not going to do anything with it, as stated before, it works fine, and truthfully, I treat it like crap anyway, so it would just get ugly again.

I purchased a 637 a little over 2 years ago and have carried it IWB since then. It doesn't come out of the holster much, probably just 1-3 times a month for a wipe down and quick inspection.
Mine has a clear coat over the anodized finish. The coating has rubbed and chipped off of some edges/corners and has some scratches on the backstrap. It hasn't "flaked" off.

The gun works just fine too.
