hi, i have a friend who has a s&w 649 .357 for sale for $300. is this a good price? if i buy it what load would you guys & gals carry in it for defense. thanks, bum

I have one in .38, and it's my "always" gun. Like it a lot, and I recommend what I carry, 38Spl +P 158gr LSWCHP. Love the Bodyguard.

Great gun, I use to have one in .38, but went to a 940. When the .357 came out it drove down the price of the .38, which was good because most people carry a .38 in the .357 so if you know ahead of time you can save money. I do prefer the Bodyguard style to the Centennial as well.

I purchased a mod.649 in SS 2-1/8" bbl. to replace my mod 60 38 spec.
The two are worlds apart IMO. The mod.60 while accurate enough to qualify with at 50 yds, it never could have been considered a pocket CCW (the exposed hammer hung up on just about every article of clothing it encountered, and the SS front sight was a real bear to line up rapidly.

OTOH, the 649 has been snag free and while I don't find the long range accuracy to be on a par with the 60, it is good enough for normal handgun range use. Being 357 gives it the edge in stopping ability.

A couple short comments; The trigger as it came from the factory was not up to the quality of the old 60 ( a few minutes with some judicious polish work solved this) and the hole in the side with the arrow that looks for all the world like a scratch is a useless POS that I will never use.

By the way, I paid 400 and change, new, a little over a year ago and thought I got a a bargain.

300.00 for a S&W 649 sounds like a good price if it's in. real good condition.I have a 649 in 38spl. The only drawback it's a little heavy. The shrouded hammer makes it a great carry gun if weight isn't a concern.I had a Model 38 Bodyguard years ago and sold it.I wish I still had it.. Hardly knewI had it on.
