Been looking for a S&W .357 Mag K-frame to keep my other K's company.
Seems to be that the only ones I can find are in the $400+ range.
Been looking at a nice tight 2.5" barrel no-dash Mod. 66, pinned & recessed 3-screw. With tax out the door it will be darn near $450. Am I crazy for remembering these were at least $150 cheaper a few years ago? Or has the value on these things gone up that much?
Thinking about going back after Xmas to look at it again.

Sounds fair to me. No steal for sure, but a great gun at a reasonable price these days.

What wasn't? ;)

You best be standin' on the owner's door in the mornin' with cash in your hand.

Yep, that same gun would be pushing $600 in my neck of the woods. $450 is a very good price in my region.

FYI, the prices of S&W K-Frame .357s (particularly 2.5" models) nearly doubled overnight, about a year and a half ago. I remember seeing a 66-1 2.5" in perfect condition for $350 2 years ago, I kick myself now for not buying it. :banghead:

It's almost like the supply of them has dried up suddenly. You can still find them, but they aren't nearly as common as they were a few years ago.

This model would have a pinned barrel and recessed chambers, so it would be more desirable to people like me. I also like the hammer-mounted firing pin. Personally, my first choice would be a 4-incher, but a 2.5-incher is a great gun for anyone's collection.

The price is right unless you find the rare one for $350. The prices of guns are going nowhere but up, and these early guns are the best in my view.

If you can get a part of a box of ammo in the deal, it would be that much sweeter, but it's sweet as it is.

I would say $450 would be down at least $50 or $100 from the average at the peak of prices 18 months ago (revolver prices peaked before the election frenzy - that was all black rifles and autos).

Check the gun out thoroughly per the sticky at the top of the forum, of course. And as a side note, I haven't routinely seen them around the $300 mark since around 2002/3. And yes, they've had at least 50% or more inflation since then, and as mentioned, even more at the "peak." I'd probably pick up another if I found it for $400/$450 out the door right now. They are great carry guns - one of the all time greats in my book.

I've been watching for a deal on a steel snub nose .357 but haven't seen anything i couldn't pass on without regrets. However I did pick up a 4" m66 S$W this past year for $320.

+1 to all of the above.

Any no-dash Model 66 is a sought-after gun. With a 2.5" barrel, even more so. $450 is well below what these guns are selling for nationwide.

S&W M66 no-dash

Picked up a 66 no dash 2.5 pined barrel, recessed cylinder 400 OTD 6 months ago. Payed the man & signed the paperwork, shook his hand then ran like I stole something! Same gun today in the same condition (Perfect) BTW are going anywhere from 450 to 550 or better. and are becoming increasingly harder to find. Just reciently I found a M-19-4 with a 2.5 for 375 but in 80% condition finish worn, signs of rust pitting on frame and trigger guard, definatly no presentation piece but definatly a shooter to be sure. After the holidays I may go back and pick it up if it's still there just for the hell of it. But I think 325 will be my top offer due to its condition. The older Smith's just like the older Colts are getting harder to find. and ya gotta grab-em when you find them. So if you have an oportunity to pick up a 66 nodash with a 2.5 bbl for 450 you better grab it boo coo fast!

66 snubby pricing

Like many people I like S&W 66 snubbies, and have three of them. The 66-3 below cost me $300, but that was 4 years ago. The 66-2 I bought earlier in 2009 for $500, and the 66-4 (3 inch) was also $500 in early 2008. I would say the typical price now for a 2.5 inch 66 in excellent condition is $550 to $600. The 3 inch versions are fairly scarce and maybe $700 or more, if the seller knows the market.

The highest asking prices are from dealers, of course. You do better buying direct from a previous owner who is not a S&W collector. The blued version model 19 snubbies are about the same pricing.

No-dash, meaning it was the first model, before it had a revision (which meant it was has a "dash number" after the model.) Each revision added to the "dash number".

For example, the Model 66, then the Model 66-1, then the Model 66-2, etc.

And Dan, I believe that was in 2005, if my THR-fu is correct. I saw that post when i used the Search function before posting my post!

Well, to update this situation:

Santa didn't bring me much of anything.

So, went back and hammered out a deal.

Bought the 2.5" Model 66 no-dash P&R as described in the OP.

Also bought a 4" Model 66 no-dash, first issue with the stainless rear adjustable sight bridge, P&R of course, with the S&W oversize walnut target grips.

We hammered out a price of $800 for both of them.

I feel o'er filled with the warmth of S&W pinned & recessed (&no-locks!) joy.

Still seemed expensive to me, but not so bad considering. If things go south, I can at least sell them to make the $$ back.

Happy new year to all.
