I was window yesterday and spotted a really nice model 66-2 in stainless. This piece looks like it was hardly ever fired, almost new condition, and has the original wood grips, and it's is in the original box. The strap only has very light surface pressure marks on it, and everything is super tight. The shop wants $500 for it, and I'm not sure what one of these is worth in absolute excellent condition. I found a 66-5 about a year ago that was unfired new in the box for $650, so I'm thinking maybe $500 is reasonable for the 66-2 considering it's an oldie? I don't really need it because I have one of each already, $400 for the 66-5 in excellent condition 5 years ago, and $350 for the 66-2 in the 1980s .

I bought one (66-6) in real nice condition about a year ago for $395 out the door. My guess is they will work with you on that $500 price. Good luck.

I love the 66, but I'd look for a Ruger Security-Six. They're stronger and you can grind the butt to a round-butt configuration. You can also find them at reasonable prices. On the other hand, Smith no longer makes these guns with plated hammers and triggers, nor are the sights anywhere as good on newer 66s. They've got small folding knives for $400+ these days, so I'd rather have the 66 than a Sebenza folding knife!

Can you get them down at all?

$500.00 may be the top end of the scale NOW, but what will the price be in 2 years, if you can find one? If you want it and can afford it, then get it.

A 2" is worth a bit more so hey, if your happy that's all that counts.

It is true that the P&R guns are worth a bit more. I personally feel the difference is completely negligible but that has not stopped the prices from going up. People will still want 66s so they will start buying up the ones that are not P&R and the demand for them will increase followed by prices. Obviously that is the future and not the present.

On a related note I saw a P&R 66 snubby sell in a shop for 650 with no box or docs. This was in northern GA and maybe the guy buying it was an idiot but there you go. Using this as a base 500 does not seem to out of line.

Have you tried making an offer or seeing how low they will go.

Price is very subjective and on most of these threads I will encourage someone to buy as long as they are not getting ripped off. I myself will only ever pay less than what I feel the gun is worth. Im not a collector and I am patient so I have that luxury.

Confederate, I believe the 2 1/2" bbl. S&W M66 already comes with a round butt, so there would be no need to grind it. I've had a M66-1 for years. It has the best DA pull of anything I've ever owned, and I would never sell mine. True, it may not hold up to a constant diet of .357's as well as an L frame or an N frame. But, be honest, do you know anybody who shoots thousands of full house .357's out of a snubbie? Plus, it will be lighter and easier to carry.

My 66 no-dash 2.5" P&R in nice shape (95% however Pachmayr grips) was $400; unless yours is absolutely 98%+ condition, it is overpriced IMHO- and it's not even pinned & recessed, 66-1 was the last of the P&R model.

A 2.5" no-dash 66 for $400 is pretty much a deal of the year. You're not going to find another deal like that unless you rob a little old lady of one or if you have a really good friend willing to make a deal. No-dash 2.5" 66s are starting at about $600 and they go up from there. Point me in the nearest direction of a no-dash 66 for $400 and I'll buy every one that I can get my hands on.
