I'm looking at a 2 1/2 inch 686 plus. The gun indexes the cylinder to the next chamber at about half trigger pull in DA mode is this normal for the 7 shot?

The 6 shot version of this gun indexes toward the end of the DA pull. Just want to know if I'll have to deduct the amount to ship back to S&W for retiming from the asking price if its not normal. The rest of the gun checks out fine and is very accurate, a real pleasure to shoot.

Thanks

My 686+ seems to lock at the end of the DA pull. Sorry. However, if something is wrong with it S&W will pay for shipping, no questions asked.

Sorry to tell you my 686 + (4 inch) also locks up near the end. Have you taken it to a good gunsmith just to have it checked out? Couldn't hurt and my past experience is they'lll check out a revolver and give an estimate for nothing. Good luck.

I'm sure it's just a matter of perception.

If you put a regular and a Plus model in my hand, I could tell them apart with my eyes closed based on the way they index. If you don't like the feel of the Plus, then you should fondle a 10-shot 617 .22LR. Those puppies are rotated and locked almost from the point where you take-up the slack!:D

Seriously, it sounds like you have a perfectly fine revolver functioning normally.:)

Thanks for your replies. I still haven't decided on this one yet. But having shot it, the gun appears to be fine.

You only have a problem if:

1) The cylinder indexes too LATE, ie the hammer might fall before it locks in.

2) It indexes so early the hand lifting it can't get by the star ratchet, which would hang up the DA trigger pull at that point.

If the DA pull is smooth, you have no problem. You have a tightly fitted gun.
