It's a familiar tale...

I was buying ammunition. Next thing I know, I have a new S&W model 908 in my gunsafe. It's all just a blur. ;)

I have never owned a S&W autoloader before, I have Glocks and a Walther.

Anything I should know that "aint in the book"? Does this gun have any special likes or dislikes? Unusual dietary requirements? Any particular maintenance procedures that I would need to be told about? Should I keep any particular spare parts around? I'm lookin' for input so let's have it. Thanks.

Tim

Great gun

I too have a 908 with about 500-600 rounds through it. I have never had any problems with feeding extracting, etc. I generally run WWB through it with ZERO issues.

Mine is still basically 'new', but nothing has come up yet. Shoot and enjoy.

I have the stainless model. The Hogue replacement grips gave it a much better feel for me. And I have very small hands.

I am the only person that seems to have actually had a problem with one (based on a lot of reading). It did not feed reliabily out of the box which got worse as it got dirty from firing. Taking advice from here I explained the problem to a gunsmith who (after a series of very specific questions..he actually grilled me pretty good in fact) took it in the back room and polished the feed ramp (and a few other things I didn't catch). Took him less than 10 minutes. He didn't charge me any money at all for it *(which is of course was absolutely evil because he knew that this would make me feel guilty and therefore I would HAVE to go back and buy a firearm from him..which of course worked).* This solved the feeding problem and I haven't had the slightest glitch of any kind since. I have fired a lot of different brands and types of ammo since with zero problems, it is very accurate. I get very tight groups with it..though I have a tendency to group a bit high and a bit right of center with it...but this is me not the 908. It is light so I anticipate recoil a little with it. From a rest..dead on and very tight. Very flat and therefore very easy to CCW.

In short, though mine did require a quick polishing of the feed ramp by a gunsmith (which apparently is very unusual) I am extremely happy with the 908 model.

Mine did have some FTE problems at first. I returned it to S&W and it has been perfect since the barrel was cleaned up. It ejects different ammo all the time.

I have a 908s too. It is " boringly reliable" as already stated. I run WWB and 124gr gold dots. My wife has pretty much beat the snot out of it. It keeps on ticking.

I did have a problem out of the box. The extractor had a very sharp corner on that would dig into the rim of the casing and jam the gun. 5 minutes with a jeweler's file smoothed the corner and I never had a problem again.

If I had to come up with a complaint, it would be the factory mags are a little expensive at about $40 each. But then I am used to buying Glock mags for $20 each.

I don't get to shoot it much these days. My wife seems to think it was purchased for her. :scrutiny:
