The Model 27 is the direct line descendant of the original 357 Magnum. Up until the mid 80's (give or take) it was unchanged since 1935.

I very much like my 5" S&W 27-2. It is a nicely built and balanced revolver. It is my favorite S&W.

27 is certainly great looking revolver

any other ideas? I don't mind pay top dollar, as this will be the only gun I will buy in 2014

If you don't minding paying top dollar, then investing $30 in Jim Supica's and R. Nahas' Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson before you buy is what you should do. Don't pay attention to the price guidelines, as they're likely out of date, but everything else is pretty informative. Great pictures, too.

Just to be sure here, is this JUST a range gun? Or will this be used for home defense, or carry? (I don't know if you even can carry where you live, but wanted to ask to be sure.)

I have about a dozen S&W revolvers from eras going back to the early 20th century. My free advice (and you get what you pay for) is for you to get whatever S&W revolver you can get ammunition for. You will never go wrong and whatever country you are in, if there is ever a problem you can always find a gunsmith somewhere who knows how to fix it.

A decent model 10 won't cost you an arm and leg, and they can be very good 6 shooters. I picked up a 10-5 with a 4" barrel, got it for nothing. My being, I've seen lots of them in the $200 range that were in super nice condition. Mine is an old LE issue carried by a detective, so it hasn't seen much use. I just saw one recently in a pawn shop that looked like it had hardly been handled or shot for $225.

I don’t know what used revolvers can be found in Germany, but in Belgium more than half of all used revolvers are S&W 686, 19, 586, 10, 617, 17 or Ruger GP100.

The others are either very cheap Arminus, Taurus, Rossi or more expensive Colt and Manhurin.

Keep in mind that a lot of those S&W 10’s are former police revolvers.

I just got a S&W 19 (2,5”) and a Colt Python (blue 6”) in near mint condition and couldn’t be happier.
