I tried looking for reviews of this rifle online, but couldn't find many. (what is with pro reviewers giving everything a glowing review?) Anyone have one or know anything about them? How do they compare to comparably priced AR's?

Anyway I put $250 down on one and am wondering if I should pick it up, I don't own any AR's and it was an impulse buy. ( I went in expecting to pick up a fixed stock yugo ak.. apparently you can't find these so easy anymore) It was $800 minus a $100 rebate.

The S&W M&P15 is a superb rifle. Well made, accurate and reliable out of the box. It comes equipped with features that you would pay extra for if you bought a stock rifle and built it up. I fired an LEO M&P and it left me wanting one very badly...Which model did you lay away?

The lowest-end one with the a3 upper and carry handle. It seemed nice and I haven't seen anything negative about it yet.

Is yours a Stag gun or built in house?

THE Pat Rogers has an article on the S&W ARs in this month's SWAT magazine. I recommend that you purchase the issue just for this article.

At Thunder Ranch last month Clint Smith said that Las Vegas PD had some problems, but the Smith ARs that he owns have run like tops (and he shoots a lot, often off the deck of his house).

Buy one, shoot it a bunch, get another just like it, get a class or three and you'll be fine.:)

Thanks guys I picked it up today and it seems really nice, won't be able to go shooting till friday. This thing "points" way better than anything else I've held. (hard to explain!) Also I've noticed that there is a a miniscule gap between the upper and lower recievers, just enough to let a little light through... this anything to be concerned with? Thanks again! Oh yeah, how can I tell if it is stag made?

IIRC, they're no longer using Stag for production. One of the "optics ready" carbines I saw had Troy sights, though, which suggests they're not lowballing on parts.

I've shot a couple, and they're solid. Trigger's a hair on the gritty side, but that's not a deal-breaker at the price (don't pay attention to their MSRP; you should be able to find them for ~$970).

The ONLY issue I've seen is that some of the Magpul magazines won't seat in the magwell.

Thanks for the info on magpuls, I'll stick to surplus for now. Now I just have to decide between an eotech or saving for an acog. I promise myself that I won't spend any more on it after I get my optics.. except for ammo n mags of course.

You picked a very good AR-15. With Smith also offering a $100 rebate, that makes it a great deal too. Where the parts originated from is of little concern... they are are solid and well made.
I've shot each version S&W offers, and my personal favorites are the Performance Center and the M&P15T with the rails and the flip up sights. The reason I like the T version is that it is very light and balances well. A vertical foregrip, light, and a red dot... and that's all it needs.
The version you picked is the one we sell the most of... and we've not had a single issue with any of them. Customers are well pleased with what they get for their money.

Trying to find any reality in a gun magazine review is like trying to find a truthful presidential candidate.

You should rethink that since many of here know Pat and most of the guys from Swat, on a personal level you might want to read the article before you speak.

Why use surplus when quality, new USGI mags are available for less than $15? FWIW, if you get some NHMTG mags or D&H, get the Magpul follower. www.44mag.com is the place for mags - great prices and the best service.

No kidding?

Of course, if perhaps you might have actually read the article before failing to engage brain and then hitting the "send" button, you might actually have an opinion.:D

Hey Steve!
Roger that- and apparently it is always better not to let facts stand in the way of myths, theories or conjecture.

Good time up here Brother- cool, but good training WX.
Did you get the Casa Grande dates in OCT?

Jump on the M&P-15 before the end of April so you're eligible for the $100 rebate from S&W. What I'm hearing from inside S&W is that their never ending rebate program will go away on some models and the rebate amount be reduced on others when the current offers expire at the end of the month.

As for the M&P-15 I can't think of any reason to tell you not to get one. They're well built rifles, and offer great quality for a relatively low price. First hand reviews from my customers have been nothing but good. They report great reliability and great accuracy.

I currently have a Smith and Wesson MP15 (with the carry handle) and I love it. I also have a few Bushmaster’s in my collection but my Smith has a tighter upper to lower fit than any of them and I chose them because they where tight, it shoots tight groups and seems to like Wolf Teflon coated ammo. What more can you ask for!

When I looked for reviews I found really no negative info anywhere until recently. Our Sheriff office ordered about 15 rifles and I was told they had some issues with a couple of them. After talking to several of the officers I felt it maybe more of training, don’t want to change issue than the firearms them selves. I may be wrong but most of them aren’t gun guys and the AR’s are issued to replace their Remington 870 or Mini 14 they currently carry. I have been told they are sending them back and ordering Bushmaster. It maybe an issue of politics for all I know.

I feel if you get an AR like mine, you will be getting a very good firearm that will give you years of enjoyment.

I picked up an issue of SWAT just to read the article by P Rogers on the M&P-15s.

I was glad to see no sugar coating in the article.

The biggest issue I've seen with them seems to stem from people buying one and trying to go shoot it without lubing it up. They all ship from the factory bone dry it seems, and when people don't know jack squat about rifles and try to run one like that, it pukes.

Right now I'm thinking the M&P15X is probably the best deal, with the carbine-length rail.

The difference between the Stag and the Smith rifles is pretty noticeable, particularly in the handguard type and in the receiver logo markings. FWIW, the Stags do seem a bit nicer finished, IMO.
