Has anyone had experience with it? Does anyone know yet if it has tendencies to crack like the Walther P22, or Sig Mosquito?

I am asking because it's almost my girlfriends birthday and I would like to buy her a new .22 handgun. If it were me I would probably get the Ruger .22 Lite with threaded barrel, but I don't know if she would like the looks of it. I can't really ask her because it's a surprise.

I think she likes the looks of the "tactical" style pistols over the look of say a Buckmark or Ruger .22. The problem is I have read numerous counts about the metal cracking. I have even had a cracked slide Sig Mosquito. I really need some help here.

I am probably going to get it duracoated if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg as well.

Ok, I am something of a .22 pistol fan. I can tell you that the 'tactical' 22's are not as accurate as the regular old Buckmark or Ruger MKIII. The 1911-22's and the other 22's that copy larger caliber guns are simply not as good; they are not as accurate and they don't have as good of triggers.

If it was me, I would strongly consider a Buckmark. It has a great trigger out of the box, its very accurate, you can put a red dot on it if you want, its fairly easy to strip down, etc. I would recommend a Ruger also, but those need a little work (remove mag disconnect, install better trigger).

If your main goal is training for a larger caliber platform, then any of the 'tactical' choices are fine.

I actually had a Buckmark camper urx. I loved it. Though I think it was a little too heavy, and the trail lite barrels were quite pricey. That's why I brought up the Ruger .22 with the factory trail lite barrel copy with the poly frame

I don't know I keep wanting to get her the Ruger lite model, but I don't want her to not like it

I love the Ruger, have one myself, but for a first gun I dislike the field stripping procedure, particularly the tendency for the hammer strut to get caught behind the frame cross-pin, resulting in an assembled gun where the bolt will only partially retract.

I can see why that would put a newbie off. Also, mine still needs a mallet to come apart after tens of thousands of rounds.

dang, ya I have heard that about the Ruger's being hard to be

I don't know, I am torn on it. =/

S&W M22A is my favorite .22lr pistol and I have all the others mentioned. I've run about 800 rounds a month through it (~10000/year) for the ~7 years I've had it.

Its so open on the sides I rarely take it apart for cleaning. Its been back to S&W twice for repair (broken firing pin, they wanted to look at it) but they paid shipping both ways so I've no complaints, and turned it around in like 10 days door to door both times. Like I always say, if you've never broken a gun, you just ain't been shooting enough!

Mine is the 7.5" fluted bull barrel model and I'll never get rid of it! I don't know about trying to shoot them all through the same hole as all I ever use is bulk pack, but shooting steel plates it blows away all the rest -- better trigger, better sights, faster to the next plate.

I don't have one, but I did shoot an M&P.22 at the range with my son. It was a rental so no clue on the round count, but it was DIRTY and had ZERO issue for about 200 rounds that we put through it. FYI decently acurate too It was also felt SUPER in the hand. My son wants one now.

Maybe with the split of S&W and walthers, they will make sone changes for the better?

What do you mean? about the split

I purchased a Ruger SR22 this last week and put 300 rounds of four different types of ammo through it without a single hitch.

I know it's not meant to be a tack driver' but it is pretty accurate and really a lot of fun to shoot.

The SR22 will shoot 2" at 25 yards off the bench. My Mk2 shoots 1/2", but then, I have a 2x optic on it. I got a 1.5" five shot group out of the SR22 with RWS Target ammo (expensive). Best groups with CCI mini mag or cheaper ammo was with Federal bulk pack, 2" for five shots. I need to try some green tag in it.

No, the SR22 ain't as accurate ans the Mk2/3, but just depends on what you want the gun for. It's very light, pocketable, makes for a great trail gun. I hunt squirrel with my Mk2.

The new Mk3 light seems like it'd be the best of both worlds, have the accuracy without the bulk. Along with the buckmark, you can't go wrong with these. I would NOT recommend ANY pistol with Zamak as part of it's material of construction.

Top poster 10 & 9. We were at the gunshop a while back when those first came out and my gf didn't really like it when she handled it.

I swear I read somewhere they were going their seperate ways? The slide for the M&P 22 is made by walthers (god I hope I have my facts correct). some people say they are inferior quality, but that seems to be the case with at least some od the "combat" .22's.

I DO NOT remember where I read the S&W/Walthers split, so I may just have spoken out of turn.

i enjoyed the feel and shooting of the rental GSG 1911 .22 we used.

I have had the m&p and it is a good gun but I had to send it back because the takedown lever broke in half. They are fixing it for free but I hate not being able to go plinking. It had only had 2 failure to feeds and that's because of cheap 22 ammo.

Is the take down level poly or metal?

I love my m&p .22 its a great gun. I've shot about 400 rounds through it and no issues. Only had 1 failure to load but it was the ammo. The bullet was odd shaped?

I forgot to ask but does it cycle bulk ammo ok? I have lots of the Winchester 555 ammo packs you get at wally world has worked good for my buckmark, and 10/22
