Any one use +P? I THINK I heard that S&W has normal loads only in their instructions. Does that make sense in a new pistol, or is it the lawyers talking?

My defense loads are +P Golden Sabers for my M&P. Haven't shot a whole lot of them (~500 to make sure the cartridges fed reliably), but you shouldn't have a problem for occasional practice and self defense.

Factory .38 Special +P ammo is loaded well below industry maximum pressure for the caliber and is perfectly safe in a quality gun in good condition.

I'm confused. What does .38 spl have to do with it?

Edit: Oh, duh. I see. Saxon, he's talking about the M&P9 autopistol, not the old M&P revolver. This is what happens when S&W recycles names.

(getting out my glasses and the owner's manual for mine ...)

All I can find is a prohibition on +P in pre-1958 K-frame revolvers, and on +P+ (which has no SAAMI specs) in all guns. Plus-P (no extra plus) has a SAAMI spec. Also, this same gun is available in .40 and even .357 SIG. I see no reason why, with its beefy slide, it couldn't handle all the +P you care to shoot. The recoil spring might wear a little faster.

Yeah, it might. Heck, it will...anything that cycles the gun harder will wear stuff faster, the reasonable question is 'will it wear it unacceptably faster?' Or, even noticably faster? I dunno.

Most PDs (most everyone, really) shoot average loads for practice and reserve the really hot stuff for duty and occasional target/training use. You can make a Kframe .357 last for a looooooooooong time that way despite the frame being on the light side for .357, so I see no reason why your average autopistol would have difficulty with a similar regemen.

I would hope the M&P would be tough enough to go with +P or +P+... :uhoh:

Glock says to shoot their guns all day long with +P+ :D
