I'm interested in a new range gun (9mm) and potential use for local IDPA. The two I'm seriously considering are the S&W M&P and the CZ SP-01. I have a number of CZ's already, so I'm inclined in that direction, but the new M&P is reportedly also a nice soft shooter, despite its lighter weight compared to the CZ. The CZ is DA/SA and the M&P is DAO of sorts and the capacites are similar (19+1 for the CZ and 15+1 for the M&P). Any insights appreciated. :)

Either one would be great.

Since you are currently familiar with the CZ's I'd go that direction, unless you are just wanting to try something different.

I don't think you be unhappy with either gun, just remember that the S&W comes from the factory as a Service weapon. The trigger pull will not be great, and it will be gritty. Do a trigger job on it, and it would turn into a very good competition gun for you.

The SP01 is a great gun for range, self-defense and competition .

I have heard great things about the MP and there seems to be a few accessories and gunsmithing happening for the gun too..

The SP01 is a little heavy for IDPA SSP division..and you need to do some lightening on it for it to make competition weight..not sure how it fits into ESP division with its heavy dustcover and rail..l

I use mine in USPSA production and it is fantastic..

Two totally different guns. One is a lightweight DAO and the other is a super heavy DA/SA. So heavy it isn't even legal in IDPA.
I've shot my M&P in IDPA competition but don't do nearly as well as I do with my CZ-75BD due to the trigger pull and the weight.

This mirrors my experience to a 't'. For gaming and range work, I prefer the heft of the CZ full size pistols. For carry, I prefer the M&P.
