wish I could invent something that could be made so cheaply, marketed inexpensively, and sold at an exhorbitant price so that I could fleece the 80% out there who think trash is treasure.

You're missing out on the cost for corporate insurance rates for gun companies. If you were able to see the cost spreadsheet for what it costs to produce and marke something like the M&P guns I suspect you'll find that a good third or more of the cost to send a pistol out the door is put into liability insurance needed for a product of this sort.

This same issue KILLED the production of private aviation airplanes by Piper a bunch of years back. I THINK they are back in the business now but for a long time the cost of a new private aviation airplane was at least 50% insurance expense. I doubt if the production of handguns is much different.

You can thank the death of Common Sense that produced the "sue me please" society that the US has turned into and the eagerness for lawyers to chase a case on a Pro Bono status for that.

So..... two years later, can anyone answer if any improvement have been made to the out of the box model?

Uh, yeah ... since you apparently missed it, S&W has made significant improvement in the trigger pull and reset of the M&P series ... the Pro series, the long-slide versions and the VTAC models all offer other substantial improvements to the base models.

Thanks old dog. yes most obviously I missed it. That's why I searched, found this thread, read it, and posted my question.
Again, thank you.

I suspect that if one re-visits the M&P for the first time in a couple years or so, one might be pleasantly surprised ... It's my duty pistol, have (very) slowly warmed up to it, lo these past six years or so ...

I check out a newer one at our last IDPA match, about a month ago. The reset was much more noticeable, the trigger was a bit less gritty, but there was still the hump in the travel you had to fight pass to get the trigger to break.

I let him try my Apex Tactical FSS equipped M&P9 and he didn't want to trade back.

Part of the problem that S&W doesn't want to address is the design of the trigger bar

Here's Hilton Yam's take on M&P trigger - http://modernserviceweapons.com/?p=182
I frequently get asked for my recommendations for various pistols, and the M&P has always been at the top of the list no matter what caliber or size pistol was being discussed ... I like the gun so much that I will be shooting USPSA Production Division most of this year using some variant of the M&P 9mm.

M&P’s in their factory configuration have a reputation for varying somewhat in the accuracy department. My particular sample is not one of those, as I have shot a sub 3″ group, standing offhand at 25 yds ... The .45 caliber M&P’s are known for excellent accuracy in their stock configuration ...

The quality of the factory triggers can vary, but I have had decent luck with guns out of the box. An Apex Duty Carry Action Enhancement Kit (DCAEK) is a simple fix for trigger woes, and their RAM (Reset Assist Mechanism) can add a more positive reset. I do not shoot to reset and am not dependent on a tactile reset sensation, so I actually hadn’t really noticed the soft reset of the M&P until someone else pointed it out to me ...

Rather than spend a ton of money on setting up a 9mm 1911 and constantly attending to it to make sure it works, 1911 guys would do well to just get a M&P 9 with thumb safety and call it good. I’m my own gunsmith, and that’s what I have chosen to do.

Last summer, S&W improved the triggers on 9mm and 40S&W models - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=674250

Here's Hilton Yam's comments on the "New & Improved" M&P 9mm triggers - http://modernserviceweapons.com/?p=...gn=mp-9mm-a-small-survey-of-recent-production
Posted on 01/09/2013
While prepping a batch of new production M&Ps for the 2013 Limited Run of 10-8 M&Ps, I was able to survey what new production changes had been put into place. These 6 pistols were the 9mm full size without thumb safety. Here’s what I noted:

The triggers on each of the 6 guns ranged from “hey, this is good and I can shoot this” to “wow, I think they sent this to the Performance Center by accident.” Takeup and break on all 6 guns were quite clean and smooth, and better than I’ve experienced on any previous batch of guns, both in terms of individual quality and across the board consistency. Reset was noticeably improved due to a new revision of the trigger bar. It has been referred to as the “tactical” trigger, but I am not sure what is so tactical about it.
