S&W M&P double-stack 1911?

Should S&W make double-stack 1911s and market it as M&P?

For me, I say a 1911 is a single stack design. Some changes are acceptable but it should remain a single stack, just my opinion.

What the heck, I say go for it.

Lots of other companies offer double stacks, and even though they aren't my favorite, no reason for S&W /not/ to go for it.

Hmmmm ... interesting results so far - 7 Yes / 16 No.

Any comments as to why?

I figured a double stack 1911 would provide the extra rounds for the "intent" of M&P's (Military & Police) notion of being a tactical pistol. No?

NOPE... that goes against the design philosophy of their M&P pistol line which is a compromise between single-stack "1911-like" pistols and modern poly-framed double-stack pistols. IMO, this is what makes their M&P line of pistols successful.:)

I like 1911's because they are slim and have good ergonomics. Usually, though not always, you lose that when making a double stack 1911.

The other problem is magazines. Para and STI double stack mags are not interchangeable. Will S&W use yet another mag or borrow from one of the other guys?

If they do I hope its not the Para. The Springfield XD45 has a very reliable 13 round mag and the Taurus OSS had a good 12 round design. The FNP45 has great 15 round mags, but they are ginormous and expensive.

The guns based on the Para mag tubes (Para, Kimber BP, RIA Widebody) in my experience have never gone beyond good enough for range use reliability and only then after a lot of futzing around. Using 200 gr ammo helps a good bit.

Well, I guess no S&W double stack 1911 for now. :D

Hello XXXX,

I would like to thank you for considering our products and your suggestion. At this time I am not aware of any plans but I will pass your request along within the company to the people that make those decisions.

Regards, Steve

Have you ever tried a stronger magazine spring? Maybe your problems are being caused by weak springs. Wolff makes one for the Para mags.

Nope. I was a very active IPSC shooter and have played with the STI, SV, Kimber, Bul, Para & Springfield double stack 1911/2011 guns over the years. There are a large number of players in that field, and it is a limited market. Practical shooters tend to be gun nuts and have a fairly strong presence on internet gun boards. In the real world shooting community they are a very small minority. I don't see a big enough market for another player to be profitable.

Additionally, as I become older and more curmudgeonly, I've come to believe that a 1911 should only be single stacked steel & walnut.

If they were to market a double-stack 1911, they should call it some variation of a 1911, not M&P which is a totally different design made for large scale issue to LEAs, where 1911s are a relative rarity. I doubt if I would buy one if they did. The one 1911 of this type I tried, a Para-Ordnance P12 c. 1999, I just didn't care for. It fit my hand OK, but the magazines, even with California-"neutered" 10-rounders, were impossible to load with my fingers - requiring a loading tool - and difficult to seat against a closed slide. And it seldom fired more than three consecutive shots without a stoppage. :barf:
