The striker-fired HK VP90 was a very early entrant into the JSSAP (XM9) trials.
Hk P7M8.

It was actually the P7M13 and it was terminated 18-SEP-1984 for failing reliability and corrosion resistance..

The other players involved
Steyr GB Terminated 4-May-1984 poor reliability
FN BDA withdrew 31-May-1984
Colt SSP withdrew 18-JJul-1984
Walther P88 Terminated 18-Sep-1984 Failing drop test, corrosion resistance, and adverse conditions.
S&W 459M Terminated 18-Sep-1984 Failing service life and Firing Pin energy

Sig P226 Technically Acceptable
Beretta 92SB-F Technically Acceptable

The P7M8 and M13 were both submitted. Either way, the government had no issue with strikers.

Ok lets dont bring up the old military handgun trials which the govt screwed s&w so bad that its still talked about til this very day. Technically smith passed those trials the firing pin test was poorly done. Smith passed the mud sand dirt water and drop test only to be screwed at the end.

The VP70 was entered in the first JSSAP trial, along with the Beretta 92S-1, Colt SSP, FN DA (Browning BDA), FN FA (High Power with unique trigger variant), FN GP (High Power), Heckler & Koch P9S, Smith & Wesson 459 and Star M28. Ultimately, all the entrants dropped out or failed.

The subsequent XM9 trial included the Walther P88, HK P7M13, S&W459, Beretta 92 SB-F, and SIG P226.

On a side note, the Colt SSP that dropped out of the original JSSAP trial was a slick-looking pistol that looked like the love child of a three-way between a 1911, a CZ75, and a S&W 459. Too bad it wasn't further developed by Colt. One of there many bone-headed moves during the 80s and 90s.

The Belgium Police adopted the M&P9 with the manual safety. OK, it's not a military contract but I tought it was a worth mentioning since they didn't adopt the FN...
