S&W M&P45c or M&P9c?

The .45c is noticeably smaller than any of the full-size guns. The 9c is even smaller than that.

I chose the 9c, but I really want a .45c as well. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

M&P 9c

I also was thinking about getting the 45c. I have a 9c, and love it. Those who are complaining about the trigger reset, and whatnot, check out apex tactical. They have an upgrade kit, with new sear, sear spring, and trigger spring. I did this upgrade to my 9c, and it is AMAZING! It was easy to do (I have gunsmithing tools, though the only thing needed is a few punches and some small tweezers). If you have questions, you can always call Randy Lee at Apex, and he will help you out. I watched his video of the installation of the kit while I was doing it, and it was a breeze.

And I bought the kit here, along with truglo TFO sights.

Cheers!

Which would you choose for a bit more concealability than the full size pieces I already own and why?

Which caliber do you like considering pistol size (9c is a 3.5" barrel and 12 rounds and 45c is 4" and 8 rounds), and thumb safety or not.

I own full size 9's and 45's and like both cartridges, one being quantity the other power. For concealability the 9 wins but the 45's power is comforting.

I'm leaning toward the 45c w/ no thumb safety.

If you can, set up three torso sized steel targets on the seven yard line, one directly in front of you and the others to the right and left of the center one.

Shoot two shots as quickly as you can into the one on the left and swing to the right, repeating the drill on each of the next two targets. Count your hits. Have someone time you. Repeat the drill moving from right to left.

This exercise is often used in defensive shooting training to teach the skills necessary to deal with multiple assailants who are moving rapidly.

Try it with both guns, and repeat the drill often enough with each to get sufficient data to demonstrate your ability with each.

Don't believe in "knockdown power", and don't count on the mythical one stop shot with either gun--it's your ability to consistently make fast multiple hits that will count.

I carry a 9c. By the way, I really do prefer the model with the safety.

I have the compact 9mm. I don't care for it. I love Smith and Wesson but I wish I hadn't bought it.

The only problem I have with it is the trigger reset. It is not crisp like a Glock and sometimes it is hard to tell if the trigger has reset so I either let it all the way out or short stroke it.
Those who are complaining about the trigger reset, and whatnot, check out apex tactical. They have an upgrade kit, with new sear, sear spring, and trigger spring. I did this upgrade to my 9c, and it is AMAZING!

They just released a RAM(reset assist mechanism) yesterday. "The Apex Reset Assist Mechanism (Patent Pending) is a drop in part engineered to improve tactile trigger reset of your M&P pistol."

I just got my 40c a couple weeks ago, even stock I love it. Trigger has gotten a whole lot better with about 500rounds through it but before too long I plan to do the apex DCAEK and RAM.

As for the OP, keep in mind that a conversion barrel is available for the 40c that will allow you to run 9mm but you can't convert a 9c to run .40s&w.
(edit: whoops read 40c and not 45c in the title, but I'd still consider the 40c for the above reason.) I haven't handled the 45c but I can say the 40c/9c conceals very well and handles great.

I have a M&P 9 Pro. I think my next semi auto will be either a 9c or 40c. The smaller size is what I would be after. In looking at them, the 45c just seems too close to a full size to be of real benefit in carrying.

Just noticed this is a June 2009 post. Wonder if he got his new gun yet.......

I have both.

The 9c is really easy to conceal with 12+1.
The 45c is the same size as a Glock 19,23 etc. Not to hard to conceal but it is bigger.
Personally I find the 9c more comfortable to carry.
It would be up to the one you shoot the best.

By the way... the finger extensions do not make it harder to conceal.

Peace

Medium Semi

For my first "4" caliber I ended up with a Walther P99 AS.
13 rounds of .40 and the ergonomics with the Anti-Stress trigger with decocker won me over.

I do want another 9mm though and I do kind of like the XDM in .45.

A year and a half later......

I went with the .45c.

Then sold it.

Now I regret it.

Will probably buy another.

I am an impulsive idiot at times.

It's calling you Prion...

I just spotted a full size used M&P 45 that may follow me home. These things keep multiplying.

Aaarghhhh!!!!!!

One of the only guns I regret selling. And I buy and sell pretty regularly.

Thanks for the pics and the thread resurrection. Always awesome to be reminded of the poor choices we have made.

Regardless of gun, keep in mind that people tend to, over time, start grabbing the easiest operating and the most comfortable gun they have. It's just natural.

I'll ask people, "hey where's Gun X today"? Ahh, I just grabbed this one, it's easiest and most comfortable.

Point being, put a lot of thinking into what gun that would be for you, when buying.

Just a thought......

Good luck

I wish I would have gotten the M&P 357sig compact because all you need is a barrel and 9mm mag to have both and I wouldnt have to change much to reload 357sig.

I have the m&p9c btw

Actually wb, you'd probably be dizzy from the number of choices you'd have to make on components 'cause they'd all be in stock! That's the maddening thing about the calibers I load for. Every time I work up a load for a pistol everything is out of stock. 9mm, 10mm (40 S&W), .45ACP and .357Mag just seem too popular for their own good these days. I'm sure .357Sig will catch up sooner or later, it's been overlooked for too long.

You can convert a 357 to 40 as the breechface size is the same. I'm not aware of anyone making a .40/357 to 9mm conversion barrel yet and generally they don't work as well anyhow.

Also, I have a M&P 9c and a M&P FS 9mm. For the life of me I can't understand all the gut wrenching whining about the trigger pull of the M&Ps. I have over 6000 rounds through my 9c and I have NEVER short stroked it once. The trigger pull is fine. I wonder how people managed to shooting Browning HPs all these years. The trigger takeup is longer than my M&Ps and there is NO reset at all. Yet there isn't nearly as much whining about them.

jon, KKM and Storm Lake both make conversion barrels to turn a 40 into a .357 Sig or a 9mm and a .357 Sig into a 40 or 9mm. They work just fine and concerning breechface size there isn't much difference dropping down to 9mm. Loading for all 3 requires (in Lee sizes) a #19 shellholder.

As far as width, I believe both compacts are the same physical size. My 9L does have a significantly deeper slide relief cut than does my 40 full size. In my previous post photo the 9L is on the left followed by 9c and 40.

The 45c is about the same size as the FS 9 and 40. If it's so you can conceal it easier, get the 9c.

No, the 45c is about halfway between the full-size and the compact 9 or 40 models.

Is the 9 thinner than the .40c? My 40c has the same outline as my Bersa 95 .380 but the width makes it harder to conceal.

The 40 and the 9mm are exactly the same width. Do yourself a favor and find a holster like this one. The thin kydex adds very little to the width of the pistol and carries it very well.

I've tried a lot of holsters but the Peters is the best IMHO. I did trade the belt loops out for loops from a Raven holster but I carried it with the leather loops for years with no trouble. I have a thread somewhere around here with pics of my M&P in that holster.

Found it, here it is.
