S&W model 17-5(Made in 1988)with a 6-inch barrel:

1)How good was the quality on these? Anywhere near as on the older Model 17's?

2)Give your opinions and/or your experiences with this model 17-5?

I got this around last christmas; it's a 17-5 made in 1988. I like it a lot, it's very solid and makes my buckmark feel 'cheap' after a day of shooting this gun. It's got a GREAT SA trigger and shoots better then I can. I haven't noticed any quality issues - it's a finely made piece.

I've got a pre 17, 17-0, 2,17-3's,a 17-5 and a 17-6. There are differences but not so much in quality and or predictible issues. Hard extraction (due to rough chambers) seems to be the biggest but still sporatic complaint of S&W 17's made in the 80-90's. Finish may not be quite as polished/deep as older ones too but still nice. All mine are accurate, excellent revolvers and a joy to own and shoot. If you have a line on a nice one and the price is right, I'd jump on it.

I have a 17-5 shooter and a 17-5 safe queen. My 17-5 shooter is wonderful. If I ever sell one it will be my 17-5 safe queen(NIB,TTT,papers, tools, etc.)Both of mine seem to be perfect in every way, which is a lot to ask of revolvers less than 35 or so years old.I luv S&W revolvers, and my tastes tend to be oriented toward really nice J frames, cause they're so damn cute and all, but these 17-5 revolvers seem to be perfect anyway.Hell, maybe all 17s and pre 17s are,I can't testify to that, but buy one if you get the chance before all you can buy are guns with infernal locks or worse.Who knows??????

"Quality"....

Hello:
I have had a bunch of K-22s through the year's. I recently picked this 17-2 up that was made in 1967. The blue was worn but the action was buttery smooth.. I decided to make her a keeper so sent it out for a fresh look. I have had pre model 17s also and the finish was a drab matte blue compaired to the newer ones. I see you are happy with your's and that is all that matter's.. best regards, Hammerdown...

Well, I do know where there is a "Mint' M17-5(6-incher)that I'm still pondering over(But no box, tools or papers!)and, with nice S&W wood target stocks! This one was made in 1988. The problem was(Yesterday)that this same Gun Shop, had an almost as mint, M18-3(Circa, 1971)that also had S&W wood target stocks on it! And, I bought this gun, instead! But, I'm still thinking that maybe I should go for the M17-5, also? The price on each was $449! Does this price seem to be(Very much?)too high, for outside of California? :what:

Well folks outside Kali pay $350ish or so they claim. So you're only getting a $100 penalty for being trapped here. But think about the $200,000 home equity you're sitting on! They can have the $350 K22s!
