I just saw a Smith and Wesson model 10-5 in the gun store a while ago.
I have the serial # and called Smith & Wesson. They said this little snubby began life in 1962. This gun is on consignment from an old woman. It was her husbands gun and he passed away. The gun shop wants $425 for it, and i'm tempted to go back and get it. It doesnt have a box or papers to go with it, but this thing is a real beauty. Its like new - doesnt look like its been shot, but if it has, not very much. probably sat in a drawer for years.
I already have 2 other snubbies, a model 60 stainless (1966) and a Model 36 Chief's Special (1971) this would go really nice whith these two snubs.
What do you guys think about the $425 price tag ?
Thanks

Depends on how much you like it. Model 10s used to be a dime a dozen. But they don't make them anymore... and they are very cool...

Sounds a little high.
I think I'd try to negotiate.

Is it a taper-barrel model?

The Model 10's that are most common and inexpensive currently are bull-barrel models.

Funny how when everything was taper-barrel, everybody wanted the bull barrel, and now that everything is bull-barrel, everybody wants the taper-barrel.

I bought this Model 10 in 1960 to carry off duty.
It has something over 10,000 rounds through it. I wore out the hammer spring. It probably shoots as good today as when it was new.

The price on the old (in good condition) J and K frames has been climbing fast in the last couple years.
At the last Dallas show I got a "good buy" on a very nice Model 10 FTF for $400.

2 inch round butt tens are in high demand around here and demand the high prices. That actually sounds pretty decent to me. Square butt, would be a little high maybe, but not that much. If you want it, if it's in decent shape, go get it and be happy. :D

Well, when mine split the forcing cone on its pencil barrel, I found a new heavy barrel for it. I prefer how it balances, don't really care what enyone else thinks. I'm old, so maybe I'm one of those guys that still wants the heavy barrel....:D

Actually Smith & Wesson still makes the Model 10 and the Model 64 (at least according to the company's website), but only with 4" barrels. The snubbie Model 10 is history. Consequently I've noticed that snubbie Model 10's are starting to creep up in price while the 4" and 6" Model 10's are more stable. :cuss:

+1. If it is as nice as you say, that is a fine price. I have seen mint ones sell for $500-ish several times.

I would also say go for it; 2" Model 10 snubbies seem to be harder to find these days (at least around where I live). So if it's decent enough and maybe you can get them down a little bit in price, I would say make the deal and get it.

Model 10

Well, i went back today and bought the gun for $425.00 , I have never seen a better looking model 10 like this one. They wouldnt come down on the price and i didnt really want to dicker over 20 or 40 bucks. I had to have it. this beauty had my name all over it and im happy with it. Im just glad it didnt get away. I even have a new Tyler T (Black) that will fit a K frame.
I'll try and post some pics.

Congratulations, ohio58. I love finding and buying cherry examples of out-of-production gems sold-off by little-old-ladies. It's why I troll the pawn shops regularly.

"Especially little old ladies......" Don't know 'bout that. Grandma does a lot of shooting. I know. I have to clean it. I'm grandpa...Grandma's is a Mod 10-5 (1970) pined bull barrel 2"...

Not much not to like about a Model 10-5 snubbie.

My wife carried this one as a duty gun for several years and it still serves as her night stand gun.

I wouldn't want to get between her and a BG that's for sure.:what:

I bought a brand new 2" 10-11 for $280 (... and a new 6" 66-6 for $350 - with a Redfield scope rail!) - plus $13 s/h from a Waco, TX S&W 'closeout' dealer 9/03. Both revolvers were steals then - the 'good old days', odd as that sounds - and my first-ever in their calibers. Hind sight - I should have bought a bunch!

The 2" 10 has the S&W Service Boots (wood) from their Accessories shop. It came with UM's rounded combats - like the current 10's - no IL, however (The 66 has one.).

I was offered $400 for my 2" 10 a year back from a friend who knew what I had paid for it - I politely declined. It's uncannily accurate - and resides on my wife's side of the bed (I have the 296 & 642.) at night. You did great.

congrats! :)

I agree, the 2" 10's(12,64's) are one coolest 10's there are, the sweest IMOP are nickel 10 2" but only if the nickel is not all screwed up
