S&W model 36 and + P ammo

Now that Ohio is going to allow CCW, I'm thinking of getting a Smith & Wesson model 36. Can the model 36 handle + P ammo.?

Absolutely, the S&W model 36 can handle .38 Special +P
ammo; although I would not want to feed it a steady
diet of them. The way I see it, practice with the milder
wadcutter ammo; and save the JHP's+P for defensive
carry situation's.

Thank's Ala Dan,I'm glad it can handle the + P ammo. I'v been looking at model 36's for a long time, and now that Ohio allows CCW I will be getting one in the near future.

Hey Stoney-

The S&W model 36 is a wonderful firearm, and when
properly trained amazingly accurate! The 3" barrel
model is really getting scarce; but there never was
a big demand for this product.

Routinely, I carry a "old model 60", same as the model
36 "Chiefs Special"; but fabricated from stainless steel.
Stoke that baby with Federal's 110* grain JHP "Hydra-
Shoks", and you have yourself a winner.

*FootNote- Unless you expect to shoot through layers
of winter clothing?

I fear i must disagree with Aladan's ammuniton choice.

the 158 grain LSWCHP +p is the way to go for carry ammo, IMHO.

Hey Stoney-

Sorry for overlooking your question regarding leather
for the S&W model 36. But, I can only recommend
those leather belt holster's as made by John
Bianchi, SafariLand, and Don Hume. Currently, I
use a very old Safariland with my S&W model 60,
that I bought new in 1971. It will only fit on a 1"
belt, but that is O.K., since I don't carry it that
often. With crime and perp's runing all over the
place; I prefer an autoloader, in the form of a .45
caliber SIG-SAUER P220A.

Leather is quite expensive, but I prefer it over those
nylon Kydex, Uncle Mike look-a-likes. You should be
able to find their products on-line; sorry, but I don't
have their links before me.

I hear ya on the Sig 220, I got one myself, great pistol. But for a CCW I will start with a 2" model 36, At least till I am comfortable and more experienced with a CCW .

Should I be worried about penatration with heavy clothing during the cold times of the year with a + P .38 round. Its not something I gave much thought to.

Yes, penetration of heavy, winter type clothing can
and most of the time will be a problem. Lightweight
JHP's won't expand as they should, due to clothing
material getting jammed in the hollow cavity. That's
when the 158 grain lead hollow points come in to
play. They offer better penetration through thick
layers of clothing; creating a better wound channel.
I think Federal Cartridge Corp. still has these in the
inventory?
