I saw one of these in a used gun case the other day. Was this just a target versio of the model 10? It had adjustable sights and a 6 inch barrel with heavy underlug.

The S&W Model 14 was the model-numbered version of the old K-38 Target Masterpiece. It was a post WWII target gun and was pretty good at it. IIRC they are based on the K-frame but built up just a little differently to make them target revolvers.

The model 14 is my favorite handgun ever. If the one you saw had a heavy underlug, it's one of the series that was produced in the 90's, and is not seen very often. For most of it's decades long life, the 14 did not have an underlug at all. If the one you saw had a decent price, and you like accurate, fun, guns, I'd snap it up. I don't suppose you saw it in North Carolina somewhere?

One of the classics. The same gun in .22 LR is the Model 17. The one pictured dates from 1970 and was listed on GunBroker at a $100 starting price. Maybe because it showed lots of holster wear (somebody carried this bad boy a lot) it attracted no interest. I watched the time wind down to a couple hours remaining and bid the starting price, $100. I had to add $15 for shipping and $15 for transfer but still a good deal, IMO. I refinished the badly worn stocks (I think they turned out rather nice) and I have been very pleased with my $100 S&W.

Was this just a target version of the Model 10?
I guess you could say that. Saying it is a target version of the Model 10 is like saying a Gold Cup is a target version of the M1911A1. It is essentially correct, but a lot of nuances are lost through the simplification.

The Model 14, 15, 17 and 18 are some of the finest target revolvers ever mass produced. They are descendants of the Target Masterpieces, and the Combat Masterpieces, whether K-38 or K-22. If the price is right, and you want a fine shooting .38 special revolver, then jump on it.

Here is my old K-38, and then a later Model 15-3, both Combat Masterpieces.

Saxon, you are a thief! What a price for a Model 17 worn finish or not. I remember a story ny Skeeter Skelton where he said he had a picture of Clark Gable (or some other movie star of the time) on safari in Africa cut out from a magazine and stuck up somewhere. He was not envious of Gable put of the MOdel 17 he had on his hip! Plenty of life left in your S&W, enjoy!

Griz22,
I believe it was Gary Cooper hunting mountain lions in the Rockies. Love those Skeeter stories.

I've had this one so long I don't remember where I got it.
It easily keeps six shots inside an inch at 25 yards with iron sights.
At this time I had it decked out for a all around house gun.

This does not do the gun justice but it's about as good as I can do anymore.

My S&W

Here is my Mod 14. When I could still see iron sights well popping coke cans at 50 yds was up to the shooter. The gun was up to the task. It's a fine pistol and one I never consider selling.

My $100 Smith is a 14. I just mentioned the 17 for info purposes. I think I paid close to $285 for a very clean 17 about 5 years ago. Not fantastic at the time.

There is a VERY lightly used Model 14-4 in my area that has been sitting in a pawn shop for months. I'd easily rate the gun 99%. Lock up is tighter than a new Lexus. By the looks of the drag line on the cylinder, I'd guess it may have been fired 100 times and then put away in a cool, dry place and forgotten. Blueing is rich and deep enough to hipnotize! They do want a bit much for it, $400. $325 would be more like it. It keeps beconning to me, especially since I'll be adding a K-22, M17 to my humble little collection soon I hope. I think they would make really nice friends :p.

M 14 8 3/8

I was getting bored with combat style shooting at our local range.
Found a good 8 3/8 M14 at a local pawn shop. Had a thumb print rust spot on the yoke, no box or stuff I took it home after $268.00.
After shooting magnums and defense pistols and such for thirty years, i'm kicking myself for not getting one years ago.

Sandmatt, I believe you are correct.

Saxon, Model 14 or 17, you stole it for 100. Enjoy!

Not My Fault

Okay this is all of y'all's fault. I now have a pristine looking model 14-4 with a six inch barrel for $250. The local Gander Mountain had taken it in on trade and priced it at the level because it was "only" a .38 special. I walked in and saw it the other day and that's why I asked about it here. My nephew has come of age and I had promised him his grandfather's 5 inch model 10 when he was old enough, he also gets the Blackhawk .357. I have seveal .357s but wanted a .38 special, I've seen worse looking new guns. The double and single action trigger is all old Smith, smooth, crisp, and light.
This ruins my trip top the big gun show in Birch Run thiis weekend, at least it punched a hole in the budget. Oh well, I don't think I'd have seen one in this condition for this price there.

IIRC... I paid $275 for this 14-4 about 3 or 4 years ago.

What a fun shooter.

Congtrats on the nice find!!

Joe

I had to take it to the range today.
Good shooter, very tightly fitted gun. Mine does not have the original wooden grips, it has rubber ones.

I have a 14-1 4 inch its a shooter for sure! it was made in 1959 so it is older than me, but still tight , did i tell you its a great shooter?:D csa

Get it while you can.

Hey jad0110
$400 may be a bit much but $75 would not stop me. They are beautifull guns and accurate as heck.
I can think back on a couple of guns that a few dollars stopped me from getting.
An old Colt .38 Sp. & a Belgium made Highpower to name 2.
Wish I had them both & no dollars will get them..:banghead:

Walkalong,

The owner of the Pawn Shop stated that the price is flexible, as I think they've had it a pretty long time. FYI, this Pawn Shop is down the road from me aways in Jacksonville NC, home of the 2nd Marine Division. Seems young Marines aren't too interested in good 'ole S&W steel. The first time I was in there, no one was paying any attention to the LNIB 14, but were instead drooling over a gawd-ugly gold-plated/tiger striped Desert Eagle :barf: (no offense to those here at THR that own one ;)).

My wife is cool with my buying a K-22/M17, as I need a replacement for my piece of crap Taurus 94. But if I walked in the door with a M14, I bet she'd snatch it from me and kill me with it :D! I would love to own a 14, as I am about to get into handloading. It sure would be nice to crank out a batch of 148 gr wadcutters propelled by X grs of W231 or HP38, and go have fun killing paper on a nice sunny afternoon. Sweet!

Just curious, is the 14-4 +P rated? Don't know why I ask, as I probably wouldn't use a gun like this for SD anyway. Is their somewhere online I can go to determine which S&W revolvers are +P rated and which aren't. I suppose that would be too easy, wouldn't it?

A 14-4 is +P rated, but why would one want to (I guess other than because one can)? It's a target gun, although the LAPD used to carry them! Get some wadcutter ammo, slow down and take life easy.

You are of course correct. And I just got done editing my post to mention that I'd mainly use if for shooting wadcutters anyway. Geez, I've got an itch, and if I scratch it I'm a dead man !

M-14 is not a itch

The wife can see that it a fine target pistol, won't toss expensive brass on the floor and she would enjoy shooting it.
And you won't lose A dime in the future owning it.
