S&W Model 19

I have a friend who is trying to sell an S&W Model 19 in .357. The finish is black and it looks to have factory rubber grips on it. From the picture I saw of it, it looks to be in great shape. I'm interested in buying it, but I'd like to hear some opinions from y'all. He's asking $300, sound about right?

The model 19 is about as good as it gets. If the gun is in good condition, buy it now!!!!

$300 is cheap for a good one, but money wasted if it is a bad one.

is what all revolvers should be: gorgeous, great trigger, accurate, versatile, great grip, and gorgeous.
If it is in good shape, $300 is a steal.

How can it be black, has it been painted? The finish should be a deep, beautiful, leg-wetting shiny blue. I owned two of those in the past, and for $300 I'd knock over a herd of nuns to get it.

The blue is so deep and rich on mine that in flourescent light it tends to look black. But in sunlight it's more of a super dark blue.

Check for slop in the cylinder. If there's only a business card's worth of rotational play or less and if the back and forth slop is only about the thickness of a piece of printer paper then she's a gem and you're getting a steel of a price.

I've got 4 S&W revolvers now. If I had to sell some of my guns to get money back or due to waining intrest in shooting the 19 and my CZ 75 would be the last two I'd have left. At that point if I had to give up one my brain would go into meltdown from trying to decide.

The picture he sent to my cell phone it looked black, I'm sure he hasn't painted it. I'll be able to look at it next Thursday or Friday. If it's in good shape, based on what y'all have said, I'm buying it.

A cell phone isn't the highest quality image and such shots are often taken in poor light. I'd bet a box of donuts that it's the regular factory blue.

I might be wrong but the Model 19 never came with rubber grips from the factory that I know of until the 19-7 in 1994.

Most all of them came with Walnut or Goncola Alves checkered target grips, except the round butt 2 1/2" snubby. It had checkered walnut Magna grips.

At any rate, $300 is a good price unless it has been rode hard and put away wet.

If it's in good shape that's a deal. The model 19 is my favorite S&W, it's just the way it fits my hand and points naturally at a target. I've since sold off all my 19's and replaced them with the 66 which is stainless. But the K frame is my favorite.

As others have said, if it's in good shape, you can't go wrong at that price. I usually shoot .38's in mine as it is older and they're not made any more. I want to be able to pass it on to my son. I would also suggest reading the 'revolver check out' thread posted by Jim March at the top of the revolver sub forum. Lots of good information in it.

My absolute, alltime favorite revolver is my 6" blued Python. However, if I were reduced to only one gun, it would be my 4" Model 19. I can't find a single thing to dislike on it.Accurate, reliable, beautiful, and serious grin factor. If it's in good shape, you won't regret buying it. Go to a gun shop and compare a Model-19 for fit, finish, and trigger to anything S&W is making now and you'll see why people love them.
