I recently bought a used S&W model 410 in 40 cal. I enjoy shooting the gun but can't figure out how to take it apart to clean. I took it to the range last month and the local expert took it from me and said you just pull back the slide and pop out the retaining pin. Of course he couldn't get it apart! Anyone have an idea how or if this thing does come apart.
Thanks to all...my first post!

If new..the retaining pin can be very very tight making it difficult to move. Almost takes 3 hands with my 908. Naturally properly verify there are no rounds in the firing chamber...etc...etc. On my 908 I pull the slide back to cock the hammer (mine is bobbed). Cocking the hammer makes it easier to push the slide back. Once cocked and slide has returned forward I push the slide back lining up the hole on the slide to the retaining pin. Once lined up (just so) I turn around three times counter clock wise and spit. Then I push the retaining pin out. Pushing it out can be pretty hard and may require using a tool to assist with the push. The turning around three times and spitting means you have already done something more stupid than the contortions you may have to employ to get everything lined up (just so) and perhaps use a tool to push the retaining pin out..especially if you only have two hands...and (therefore) don't feel stupid or embarassed. Good luck. :)

You can download a copy of the manual from the S&W website, although you need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to open and read it ... (it might take a few minutes with a slow dial-up connection, though, if you don't have DSL).

http://www.smith-wesson.com/wcsstore/SmWesson/upload/other/Pistol.pdf

While you should naturally read the entire manual, the disassembly & field-stripping info starts on page 24.

If you were to Browse over on the S&W Forum you might find some info, experiences and tips from other owners/users, too ...
