I just purchased one from a friend who had no use for it and only fired it once. Her son bought it for protection many years ago,and it was used when he bought it. It was manufactured in 1975. Excellent shape. Any suggestions on a holster.
I have a 459 that I bought new in 1986. I have never carried it in a holster so I can't offer any specific suggestions. However, becasue the gun silhouette mimicks the 1911 I would find a cooperative gun store and ask to bring the 59 in to match up against a current 1911. Once you find a close match, use the 1911 in your search.
I am extremely fond of my 459. I have recently toyed with a desire to try a grip that has an integral rest for my thumb. I am thinking this might help my accuracy just a tad more. Just a thought. Bad news, no such grip exists, at least as far as I have found. Also, true factory mags are very hard to find and expensive.
I had the S&W model 59 for several years, it did not fit my Yaqui slide holster made for a 1911. It did fit my Galco pancake holster for a SIG P239. Trigger guard profile too long for my 1911 holsters. Traded the old 59 some years back, never really warmed up to it like I did my first pistol, the S&W model 39-2.
I had an old model 59 in bright nickel many years ago. One of the few I ever traded and regretted it ever since. If I recall correctly, the nickel was flaking off the slide rails and I wasn't sure how long it was going to last. Pretty thing though. I don't recall what I had for a holster but that's long gone too. Most impressive (read lucky) shot I ever made was with that gun.
The Smith & Wesson model 59 was my first 9mm auto. I sold it in 1981 and I am sorry about that. It never gave me any problems. I know people were having problems with the extractors, but I never did. I never carried it in a holster. Today, I would not mind a 59, but I doubt I would carry it in 2011+.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I think my first priority is the sights. They are difficult to see for these old eyes and I am going to try some paint on the front sight.
