I went in the gun shop Saturday here in Ohio and found a Very nice Smith & Wesson Model 66 4" barrel .This gun in a police trade in from Australia. It has new Smith & Wesson wood grips with Tyler T Grips on it. Nice looking gun. A few Very lite scratches. Asking price is $395
What do you think on this price. Always wanted a 66 and came across this one?

Seems like a reasonalbe price around these parts if it's in good mechanical condition.

A few Very lite scratches.
Probably had a few light scratches two days after they took it out of the box the first time.

Those early S/S guns show scratches like crazy.

I would carefully inspect the forcing cone for cracks, and the top strap for flame cutting.

If those check out, it's probably a fairly good deal.
A new Tyler T-Grip is $25 bucks plus shipping!

Yes, sounds good. Just check it out, and look for signs of lots of magnums like rcmodel said. Also check the endshake on the cylinder if you can; that's another wear point on those models with lots of use. A year to two ago you could not find one of these for that price; prices have softened up a good 10 to 20% or since then.

The price isn't too bad if you look at what they're charging for the IL guns these days. You are aware that the cylinders of the Smiths released in Australia rotate the opposite direction of Smiths released in the northern hemisphere aren't you?

The rifling is reversed as well to make sure the bullets stablize "down under." :D

The 66 is one of the best all-time .357s, IMHO. You can clean up the scratches with a little cleanser like Comet.

Sounds good. Does the gun have flash-chromed hammer and trigger?

I like the older models that have recessed chambers and pinned barrels, but chances are you'll like it anyway.

For strength and durability, I'd also opt for a stainless Ruger Security-Six if I could find one.

The price is very good. I think the day is not far distant when guns will cost a grand or more. Hyperinflation already has beenengineered into the money supply. The only reason you don't see it is because the money isn't moving.

Does it have a dash after the model number? I understand that the earlier models had some features not found on later ones. Solid front sight blade, all stainless steel rear sight, and a slightly harder composition of stainless steel thoughout. I really like that gun. It has a great combination of weight, balance, and strength. In my area, I think that gun is easily worth $395 and more, if it's in good condition.
