I am looking for a new .45 ACP to replace my Sig P220, any S&W .45's known for rock solid reliability?

A little on the pricey side($1,200.00 and up), but it's awfully hard to beat Smith's Performance Center's 945 for reliability, finish and accuracy.

My first thoughts were either the new M&P or the 3rd generation 4506.

Yes, the basic stainless steel model [product code #108282]
is a 5" no frills weapon that is highly reliable and very accurate
straight out of the box. Cost, is a tad less than $800 NIB~!
Comes with Novak three dot sights, skeltonized hammer and
trigger, lowered and flared ejection port, and rubber grips.

*FWIW, in my own test it was very impressive, and ran equally
as well as my much more expensive Les Baer Thunder Ranch
Special 1911.

I just shot my new S&W 1911 today for the first time (SKU#: 108299). It wasn't even properly lubricated and still got through 500 rounds with only two minor hitches.

It's purdy too. :)

I've never read anything bad about the S&W 1911's. I second the recommendation to look at the HK USP or HK45. Very reliable.

Never heard anything bad about S&W's.

I second the recommendation for HK USP...and HK45. Both are very accurate and very reliable.

I would suggest a 4563TSW. I had the stupid rail removed from mine, and a spurless hammer installed.

Now I can use Sig 220 leather, and it doesn't shred my coat liners.

Mine has 3500 rounds through it without malfunction. It literally feeds empty casings. Accuracy is top notch, and it is the lightest carry 45 I have ever had.

I also own a HK USPF 45. It is a fine handgun as well. The USP is heavier than the 4563TSW, and more difficult to conceal. Good luck with your search!

If a full sized gun is what you're looking for, the 645 is very nice. If you'd like a lighter carry gun, look at the new M&P model.
S&W made lots of .45 models through the years, from full sized guns like the 645, 945, etc, to the CS45. I've had good luck with all the S&W's I've owned.

I like all of them

4506, 4567, 4566, 4563, 4516 (I bought the first one when they first came out; have owned two -2's since; prefer them to -1 style), 457; My experience is they are all dead solid reliable; never had a glitch.
I didn't shoot so well with the 4567 and CS45, but never had a malf, either.
My 4506's have been police trades; one had apparently been worked on for a marksmanship team.

Main negative; they're heavy; but they're built like tanks; they grow on you.

Currently own 4506, that works with 4516 slide, CQB (Performance Center 4563) & 4516-2. Will buy another 4563 and another 457, if a good deal on a 4506 or 4516 comes up when I have cash I'll snarf them up. Have owned several 457's. People keep talking me out of them, or I give them as gifts to friends just starting out.
I want an old style 4513. Never owned one. Also have owned several 69 series 9's. Liked them too.
I think they're terribly underrated; deserves a second look and upgrade at S&W sales dept. Can't tell the difference in feel between 4563 and Sig 220.

Cheers, TF

I've had great experience with the S&W M&P. And their customer service is great, which is something I consider when buying a gun.

The 4500 and 457 both tend to be good guns, allow frames on them. I own two model 457's, one all black, the other with the silver alloy slide, but black frame. I find them to be solid guns, and my good friend shot both of them at the range and loved them. She was totally jealous. I might sell her one of them if she can come up with the money, and if she ever was in the situation of needing money and wanting to sell them, I would totally buy it back.

I might not shoot them a lot, but they are more accurate than my Glock 36.
