I have a Sig P220 .45 that I keep primarily for HD. My P220 has the "Internal Extractor", and has had a few issues over the years. I am considering trading it in for $550 worth of 9mm and .38 ammo.

I have a Walther P99, P99C and Sig 226 all in 9mm, which I shoot all 3 regularly.
All 3 of my 9mm have been more reliable than the P220 .45

IMO the .45 is a better HD caliber than 9mm, however, I guess I wouldn't feel under gunned with my Walther P99 w/16+1 of 9mm 124/147 gr. HST's

Your Thoughts Please,

I thought the P220's with external extractors had more problems. But if you don't trust it, trade it.

I have a reliable .45 (Glock 30), but I rely on my Glock 17L and Cor bon ammo for the home. I've had the 9mm much longer and I trust it with my life.

I bought the 220 new 4-5 years ago, it has a brushed nickle slide.

How can you tell the difference between milled or stamped and why do you ask?

the stamped slide has roll pins behind the chamber, the milled has a solid pin.

the internal extractors on the stamped slide models set the standard for reliability. problems started with the milled stainless slides. the external extractors are the solution for the milled slides.

not all, or even most, of the milled slides have an extractor problem. but if you have a problem, there aren't many solutions.

you know i never ask. what issues are you having? extaction? or feeding?

My general experience has been once I get rid of a gun, at some point I wish I hadn't. If you do trade it, and you like sigs, get a 229. I've shot 229's in 9mm and 40 in both DAK and DA/SA. All shot like a dream. I believe they just came out with a new SAS Gen 2. It's a little more smoothed out than the typical 229 and it's DAK for better conceal carry.

The Issues Have Been Minor

When I first bought the gun, many times when chambering a round with the slide lock, the round would hang up on the ramp, sent it back to the Sig Armory and got it back the same way. I polished the the ramp and evetually that problem went away.

This gun has stovepipped a couple of times, and the latest issue was the slide not locking open on the last shot (believe me my thumb didn't hit the slide relrease) , I have since changed the recoil spring, shot 250 rounds and had 1 stovepipe and no slide issue.

This gun is by no means a jam-o-matic, however, I have only fired about 1200 rounds with this gun and about 12,000 rounds with my Sig P226 9mm.

I guess my thoughts are since I have 3 9mm handguns with no issues at all, one of those may be a better choice for HD.

doesn't sound much like an extractor problem from your desription.

if a 9mm would broaden your comfort zone, i'd go with it...my bedroom gun is a tuned S&W 696 in .44spl, backed up by a 226ST in 9mm
