S&W N Frame 3 inch barrel models?

I noticed all the pictures are from the right side of the revolvers, so I'd reckon so. Some of the folks over on the S&W forum said that the right side of the gun is the "presentation side". Other folks there dispute that. I'm not sure, but I know my 29-2, and 27-2 both show their left sides, in their wooden presentation boxes. My S&W catalogs from the 80's and 90's show the left side of the revolvers too. Kind of confusing, ain't it?

The only current production S&W that won't sport the ILS is the M40 Lemon Squeezer reissue.
Do you have a cite for this? I will buy one in an instant if true.

Please help with a valuation?

I have a 629-1 with a 3 inch barrel. It is an older Lew Horton special. It is used but in very good shape. I know that without seeing it you cannot make a firm price, but I am only looking for a range. I mostly shoot .22 now and almost forgot this gun was in the back of the safe. Thanks for any help.

I have an S&W 610 with unfluted cylinder like this one. I added Ahrend's Tactical Revolver Stocks in cocobolo.

The weight of it tames the 10mm's recoil quite nicely.

I bought a 629 3 inch with a non-fluted cylinder for $400 last year. That checkbook came out faster than my draw. I feel I got a good deal. The pistol is mint!! Steve48

Does anyone know when the first RSR Trail Boss came about? Was it thye 629-4?

So, Currently we have these 3 inch N frames in production.. Please add to the list if you know of anymore.

1. Trail Boss ,44 mag(unfluted and fluted) - RSR
2. Comp Carry, 44 mag - reg. prod. Smith and wesson
3. 629 ES, 44 mag - Reg prod S&W
4. M24, 44 spcl -LH
5. M25, 45CP -LH
6. M29, 44 amg-LH
7. M27, 8 shot 357 mag - LH

Are there any others currently in production from any other distributor?

How long ago did they stop making the 3 inch N Frame .45 Long Colt?

Did they ever make a 41 mag 3 inch N frame?

I keep thinking how cool it would be for Smith and Wesson to make a Seven Shot N Frame .41 mag in a 3 inch barrel.

I was going to mention all the newly released old guns on the S&W site but S&Wfan beat me too it. Everyone really should take a look on the site because they are beautiful revolvers. (except for the ugly hole in the side) S&W released all their 3", 4" & 6.5" N frame oldies in Blue, Color Case and Nickle finishes. They even released (or re-released) them with a square butt and retro wooden grips!! Very Nice!!

Hello
Lew Horton is also offering the Model 29 with Larger Target sized grips now. ;) Oddly they have the Upper side Plate screw, but Not the Trigger guard screw ? I thought the Side Plate screw was first to dissapear when they changed them over to modern ones ? Revolver Fanatic

Here is mine a 4 inch, i just bought it for about half the MSRP, preowned, It is perfect and i just put 100 rounds through it at lunch today. It is very nicely fitted, and the blueing is very well done.

Mine is a 22-4 thunder ranch, note the small TR logo on the top of the grips, the barrel is roll marked S&W Model 1950 on the other side.

I got the nickel 29-10 6.5" on layaway since December. Gotta wait for the one gun a month ruling to be satisfied ya know?:barf:
The price is actually better than an older 6.5" 29.

Yes the screws are reappearing out of the order in which they disappeared. Mebbe that's in consideration of their collector audience?

It's a beautiful gun BTW!

That's strange that they are doing that. From what I'm reading on the gun boards, and seeing in my local shops, folks in general, and collectors in particular, don't like the new revolvers. The shop owner told me thats the reason it's so hard to find a good clean used one, with no key lock. Everyone that collects S&W's is buying the nice old ones up! Looks like I'm going to have to settle for an old shooter grade, at this rate.

Well it depends on what you're after. if you interest lies in the popular J, K, L and certain N frames, then your gun shop guy is full of it. The big sellers are always available pre lock. It is the gun forums' general dislike for the lock that jacks up the price of run of the mill guns like Model 19s and such.

I'm into N frames meself and most K, L and J frames do not interest me. Unfortunately, the guns I want, if I even find them in vintage form, cost as much as double and triple my mortgage payments so it is fortunate for me that S&W is bringing back these models.

The big collectors in the S&W forum are all over the post locks guns. I guess that there is a point where you amass enough guns that you are interested in getting each and every variation so that politics or emotions do not get in the way of your purchases. One guy who owns the PROTOTYPE 44 Magnum from the 50s likes his new 29-10 very much.

yoonohoo, it looks like it is for real. S&W made a run of the 3" 657 no dash with the standard barrel profile in 1986. Thay made several thousand though, not just 150. The confusion is due to the fact that in 1998, Lew Horton ordered another run of 3" 657-3s with the full lug barrel. To make it worse, the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (both editions 2 and 3) do not make the distinction between the two runs very clear at all. It is the full lug 3" 657s that are so rare. The earlier standard profile guns are still pretty scarce and can be hard to find, but there are significantly more than 150 of them out there.

They are great N frame snubbies. Look like a 2.5" model 19 on steroids, and not everybody has one, especially in the .41 mag flavor. I do, and I'm very fond of mine.

The buy it now price of $950 seems a bit steep. If you really want it and can get it around $750 or so, it's not exactly a bargain, but you wouldn't be getting ripped off either.

The worst thing I did was browse Smith's website last week... lol First I saw those 3" Lew Horton's models and I knew I had to have one, so I ended up ordering a M25 through my dealer. Then of course the Dirty Harry in me insisted I order a 6.5" M29. Hopefully I should be picking up both this week for the combined total of $1550.02. :D

Lawyer locks-S&W magnum revolvers...

I hear about security locks/lawyer locks in S&W revolvers breaking or as the cause of ADs in revolvers a lot. I'd think Smith & Wesson would change the design in some of the DA revolver models and lose the security lock systems.

Most cities/states have passed laws against firearm makers being sued over gun locks so why keep them? :scrutiny:

Magnum or large caliber DA revolvers would be much better if the revolver came without a security lock or maybe have it as an option.
