Yeah, I know, you guys think I'm nuts :p . But I figure where there is one nut, there is bound to be more :D .

I'll start by saying that I routinely carry IWB a 5" 1911, 2" and and 4" Model 15s and a 4" Ruger Police Service Six with no problems (I am 6'7" and about 205-210 lbs).

So this is kind of a challenge for me, to find the upper limit in a carry gun. I am one who prefers to carry the most effective handgun (for me) that I can conceal carry on a frequent basis. I shoot K and L frames better than J Frames, and though my experience with N Frames is limited, I won't be too surprised if I shoot them better still than Ks and Ls. YMMV, of course.

Hence, the desire to try carrying an N Frame S&W (assuming I can shoot it at least as well as my medium framed wheelguns), specifically my 4" S&W Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman. I already have a 1.5" bullhide gunbelt from thebeltman, so I'm good there.

But I do need different stocks for this gun (wood, no finger grooves), as the rubber pachmayr presentation grips (like most rubber stocks) just don't do it for me. I find the ginormous S&W target stocks to be too big and fat for even my large hands, plus they jam my knuckle into the back of the trigger guard, so they are out. The smaller walnut magnas with a Tyler-T grip are an option, though I am open to other possibilities. I hesitate to go this route, as I haven't found an N frame so equipped to hold in my hands.

What I did get to handle for myself was a 4" Model 25 with Eagle Rosewood Classic Grips. These have a feel similar to the slim S&W classic "coke bottle grips" (and the old Ropers) that I really like. Quite simply, they feel darned good!

The only problem I see with them is that the stocks extend below the grip frame; does anyone know of stocks with a similar shape that end at the bottom of the grip frame for better/easier concealment (again, wood with no finger grooves)?

Though that can be compensated for with a quality IWB holster, perhaps with a forward cant. I imagine the Mil Sparks VM2 is available for the N Frame, but are there others that are worth looking into, such as offerings from Tucker Gunleather?

I appreciate everyone's input.

I find the stock magna's and a Tyler-T Grip to be a good compromise. The single finger swell on it is hardly enough to turn it into a "finger grooved" grip, so it might work for you.

I know that both Kim Ahrend or Craig Spegel offer a grip like what you want - both make a "boot" style (not sticking past the grip frame). Be aware, the downside to this grip is you have less leverage on the gun as the pinky generally won't fit on the front strap for most people with this type grip.

T-grip in place:

Simply Rugged makes a cool pancake holster called the Sourdough Pancake with an option of IWB loops.

(that's an N Frame Mountain Gun in there)

I've got a 4" model 29 I've considered CCWing too

If you don't mind Kydex, Hoffners makes a cool N Frame IWB holster too.

I second the magna's and t-grips. As for holsters try lobo gun leather. I have an iwb for my 625 mtn gun and a model 22 thunder ranch and it works great for me. I hope that helps.

I used to tote a 4" S&W .41 magnum Mountain Gun. I used Craig Spegel boot grips. Were I a Buffasaurus such as yourself, I reckon' a call to Herretts grips would be in order. They can make a pair of their many styles of grips, fitted to YOUR hand. Good folks, to boot.

The Magnas and T-Grips will work great on the model 28 ... however on my 29 I really need to have the back strap covered (that or only shoot .44spec).

Love the vintage look of the T-Grips though. I've been kicking around the idea of picking up a model 19 or 66 snubbie for CCW and ideally it'll wear stag magnas with an appropriately colored t-grip.

I sometimes IWB carry a 4" 629 in a Hoffner's rig like Z. posted.

I do keep the rubber grips, though.

Here are some shots:

In the last pic, you can tell it's there if you're looking for it, but that's not bad for concealing a .44 Mag and 3 speed loaders.

I removed the rear belt loop, drilled a hole a bit lower down along the rear edge of the holster, and reinstalled the loop there. That spreads out the anchor points on the belt and gave it a slight forward cant. Easy 30 second modification.

Sam, any way you could post a pic of the gun not in your pants?

I'm considering the Hoffners one but I've got some mods in mind and wanted to see what the lower part of the holster looks like. I prefer clips over loops and was thinking of modifying one with a par of SnapLok type clips from Crossbreed.

As I mentioned, since those pictuers were taken I've moved the rear belt loop back near the tension screw.

Ok ... will a Ruger Redhawk even fit on one of those?

Obviously not THAT one 'cause it's molded for an N-frame. But they build custom holsters to request, so I'm sure it could be done.

Might want slightly larger pants...

I have a full coverage IWB with thumb break for a 6.5" N-frame, made by Kenneth Campbell in Alabama. I don't carry it that way often (sitting is sometimes a challenge).

My experience with the Hoffners holster is that it failed to release the gun. It is not a well designed holster if that can happen.

Grips: Eagle Secret Service Grips for N-Frames! Nothing extends below the frame.

Holster:

Custom leather is probably the way to go. Lobo Gunleather will work with you to make the perfect holster if one of their current models isn't exactly right.

Interesting. There is a tension adjustment screw, so such things can be suited to your personal preference.

I used mine in competition for quite a while -- the gun came out every time I pulled and it drew and holstered smoothly and positively.

I am trying to picture how it would "fail to release" the gun. You pulled and pulled and the gun wouldn't come out? Or was it just tighter than you'd prefer? Or did it have some edge or bump that snagged the draw?

Thank you for all the suggestions thus far. I am going to do some digging on the suggestions posted thus far. I am no rush, I want to do this right the first time.

Something I forgot to post in my OP was that I prefer leather IWB holsters with the belt loops spread far apart.

BTW, here is my new to me 28-2, wearing it's butt ugly rubber grips  . Paid $425 for it; not too bad. This one has some variation in the polishing between the barrel and cylinder (more glossy) and the frame (more matte). No biggie, I've seen other 28s that were finished in a similar manner. Just another reminder that these guns were built with serious purposes in mind.

CCW grips for large hands

I too carry the 4" N frame and have looked long and hard for the right wood grip. I've settled on the Spegel checkered extended boot grip.

cprher, Those are some of the nicest grips I've seen this side of a set of Ropers.

Very nice!!

I'm over a foot shorter, and there were a few months when I routinely carried a concealed N frame OWB. I find the 4" N frame to be beautifully balanced, and if you can dress appropriately, it makes an excellent CCW.
