Today I found a 65-3? . It was a larger frame short barrel revolver in stainless chambered in .357.

What is a fair price for it. Good but not great condition, a couple small scratches and one deep scratch. Used but not abused. I did see a little flame cutting but not deep at all.

perhaps you have found a 686?

It's rather hard to know what to tell you without knowing the exact model. Pictures to help determine condition help as well.

Like sixgunner said, are you asking about a M686? The M686 is a L frame .357 Magnum. If so in the condition you're describing, in my area that revolver will cost right around $400 but it's hard to say without seeing the gun.

I think I'm on pretty solid ground saying it isn't a M68.

Stainless: Yes
Larger Frame: No, it was built on a K-frame
Short barrel: No, only came in 6"
.357 Mag: No, only chambered in .38 Spl

My guess would be in the $325 to $400 price range. I am guessing by short barrel you are talking a 2" or 3" barrel. The common barrel length is 4".
The most desirable 65's at the moment are the 3" guns. A 3" carrys well, and still has a full length ejector stroke.

I bought a very clean 4" 64 the other day for $420 delivered with transfer fee. I did not want a beat up police/guard trade in, and gave premium price for a very nice nearly unfired gun.

The 65 is the stainless version of the 13. Fixed sights, 4" barrel in 357. Maybe offered later in a 3" length.

I guess most folks around here never heard of one.

Locally, a pre lock 3 inch 65 will bring $450 to $500, depending on condition box & docs ect.

Great revolver! :)

Howdy

Here is a photo of my 65-3. Sorry, it's not the best photo in the world, but you get the idea. Stainless, 357 Mag, built on the K frame, 4" bull barrel, fixed sights. Yes, it is a great revolver.

I bought it at a gunshow about ten years ago. I got it for just under $200, but I doubt if you will find one for that now.

Mine was an ex-police pistol, as a matter of fact the dealer told me it belonged to a female officer. She sold it when she retired. I have no problem buying ex-service pistols, most of them have been pretty well cared for if the department had a decent armorer. Besides, it is not too difficult to replace worn parts in a Smith.

"Fair price" for a revolver like that tends to be pretty regional from what I have noticed in my travels. Big price differences from up north to down south. I don't know the market off hand for that in Central Texas though. But anywhere from 350$-500$ sounds about right.

Well, a 65 is a great gun, but it's not a larger frame, just a good old K. I have a 13, the blued version, in a 3" barrel. Mine was nearly unfired and very clean, and I gave a premium price for it because of that. Paid $500 for it early last year.

buy it, shoot it. you will either love it or you'll just have a solid, reliable gun you like. Me, I love'em. Can't wait til I can afford another one.

If you like it don't let a fifty dollar bill get in the way!! Fifty bucks spread out over the lifetime of shooting fun that gun will give you is nothing. If it checks out okay $300.00 is a fair price. One would be hard pressed to find a revolver of that quality nowadays for less.

+1 on that advice!

yesterday is gone..
$300 don't buy much around here
jump on it, if the trigger & gap & timing checks out
$50 is maybe 150 rounds of off-the-shelf 38 fodder these days, one good range session
they don't make 'em like that anymore, friend

There have been a number of 3" RB 65s, I suspect are ex-prison guns turning up lately. I recently gave $310 for the least scuffed of the ones I looked over.

My S&W Model 65-5 .357 Mag Revolver, circa 1992, 3” bbl, Stainless Roundbutt Frame, Wood Grips, box and papers, zero flame cutting, looks basically as-new.

I paid $560 about six months ago for it at a LGS. Not a great deal, I suppose, but the 3" barrel drives the price up around these parts. I paid it and am happy with the gun. That said, a M64 in 3"bbl is on my hip right now as I consider my M65 3" to be a little too pristine for daily carry. The M64 3" in a pancake holster is perfect for my purposes as a homestead EDC.

For $300 It'd be mine already.
Grab it for that price!

There are a couple of 3" 65s for sale on gunbroker right now.
But I just bought a Model 38, so I can't swing it today.
