Don't know if anyone else saw this, but S&W announced the "new" S&W SD VE series today. Only difference I can tell from the regular SD series that they just discontinued is that all the slides are apparently stainless.

Not sure what the MSRP was on the old ones but the new ones are showing an MSRP of $379. MSRP of the Sigma is only $369. Sigmas are still listed on the site but I'm willing to bet this is pretty much a replacement for the Sigma model. It can't make much sense to maintain 3 different production lines are product models with this much functional overlap.

hmmm... i agree. looks too similar to the Sigma series, so thinking they're going to discontinue that series and just have the new SD VE line

I can notice a few differences between the SD, Sigma, and this, but they mostly look aesthetic, and not like they changed the grip angle, or backstrap, etc.

Yes, I was wondering how it differed any besides the stainless slide (I got a S&W email about it earlier today)

S&W make some of the finest handguns in the world! The Sigma was &is a fine example of that fact. I cannot wait to shoot this new auto pistol! Looks fine &if it shoots as good as the 4 Sigmas I have owned, it should do well on the market!Even at a MSRP of $379! Chock up another one for S&W!

I bought a SD9 when they announced it was being discontinued. Got it NIB for $369. I had been on the fence about getting one for a while and I knew if I was going to get it I better do it now. I have been very pleased with it.

I kinda figured they would do something along the lines of this. No reason to have all 3 (Sigma, SD, & M&P) and the M&P was too well recieved to mess with. What made the most since was sorta combine the Sigma and SD and just have 2 lines

The difference you may have missed? Same money as the SD, no more tritium front sight.

Suggested retail on the SD series was $459. Suggested retail on the SD VE is $379. Naturally we won't see them at those prices, but the ratio will likely remain consistent. IE, the SD VE is 17.5% lower in MSRP so it'll probably be about that much cheaper in street price as well.

Its a little heavier than the M&P but not much. The reset and return are a little more positive too. I like it.

I know someone that works in Smith and Wesson who is associated with these pistols. While I am not trying to put down this pistol by any means, you are getting what you pay for. They are cheaply made...

The M&P series is worth the extra money to avoid the headaches

I do not see any "high mileage" range reports on the SW9/40 (Sigma) or SD series pistols, like with some other models of handguns. The Sigma/SD grip is outstanding in my hand (LGS), I have not shot either.

Dunno how many rounds you consider "high mileage", but I've got somewhere between 3-4k rounds through my 9ve. I've had no malfuntions with the exception of a few ammo related problems. It eats everything, and still looks brand new inside.

But, the trigger still sucks. Mine's a HD weapon, so I have not tried to smooth it out or lighten it. I may send it in to Smith under warranty some day...

I own two of the sd's one in 9 and one in 40. The 9mm has about 2000 flawless rounds and 40 300 flawless rounds. These guns are gems and for the money you can't go wrong at all. As for the trigger it is not heavy to me it about where a self defense gun should be 6 to 8 lbs and very smooth. I'm a Glock guy but i have to say these are very good guns and they have their own trigger system. They are not a sigma nor a M&P but the better quality and features of both. I own the original sd with steel night sights and melonite finish but the VE series seems to offer everything except those two items. Love this pistol and I don't see cheaply made here at all. I prefer it to the M&P line I really don't need changable back straps. The 18 degree grip is very comfortable. The orginal sd's cost about what a glock was going for with plastic sights, The ve's are running about 329.00 each, which is an excellent price. Buy what you like and want and don't worry about it, they have a lifetime warranty anyway, so who cares. My guns are just as accurate as my Glocks and cuts centers out of the target. Accurate, reliable, well built, and reasonably priced with a lifetime warranty, what more can you ask of a handgun.
