The thumb safety on my Shield Plus is hard to operate. It's small and stiff and a bit tricky to get my thumb on it just right when trying to flip it to the "FIRE" position. It seems that I'm not the only one who doesn't like it. I've looked around and I don't see S&W or anybody else offering a thumb safety for this gun that's easier to operate. Maybe the thumb safety from some other model of S&W gun would work, but I don't know.

I think one reason S&W made it this way is that so many people hate thumb safeties, preferring the Glock design, which has no thumb safety. So they grudgingly put this little safety on these guns just to satisfy the few of us who want one. One reason a lot of people don't want the safety is because it can get accidentally flipped to the "SAFE" position, and it can slow you down a bit when flipping it to "FIRE" before shooting. But flipping to to "FIRE" is a bit difficult.

So I tried a simple thing, just to see if it would make the safety easier to operate, but wasn't a big PITA to install. I got a piece of 3/16" diameter shrink tubing (used for insulating electrical connections), worked on it a little with my dikes, and made a little tube I can slide onto the existing safety lever, and shrink it down with a BIC lighter. A heat gun would have been better, but I don't have one. The shrink tubing comes if various colors, but what I had was green. I think this mod helps a lot. Now the safety lever is fatter and has a softer, more frictiony feel, and it's a lot easier to operate. I can put it in the "SAFE" position, if I really mean to, but it's not going to go to that position without some effort. But now flipping it to "FIRE" is a lot easier.

Here are some pics of what I did.

When you heat up the shrink tubing just a very brief exposure to the flame is all that's needed. Then before it cools down it's quite flexible and can be molded tight against the edges of the lever with a thumb nail. The BIC lighter flame will leave soot on things, but this can be cleaned off with alcohol or gun cleaning solvent. It doesn't take much flame to shrink the tubing. No more that a second or two. I think the plastic of the gun can tolerate a much higher heat than this. Mine shows no sign of having been warmed up with the lighter.

The shrink tubing should be just a tiny bit too long on the front and back ends, so it can be mashed down when it's still warm. This makes it impossible to accidentally slip off when you operate the lever. Not too long, tho. It needs to stay in the grooves in the plastic when going up and down.

I don’t see the need.
Both my Sheild 9mm and Bodyguard.380 have the diminutive frame mounted safeties.
Neither have proven to be prone to accidental activation. I normally carry them off, ignoring them. I carried a Glock the last 10yrs before I retired. Off duty as retired since if I think locale and demographics where I’m going dictate. (.40!)...

My latest acquisition, a .30SC EZ has a full size ambidextrous safety.
I’m inclined to use it if carrying exposed...

The safety on my Shield Plus has never been a problem getting on and off. That's not a bad idea I guess if you're having problems..I think I'd have opted for black shrink tape rather than slime green !

I turn the safety off when holstering and on if it gets retired to the safe. The gun resides in an extra IWB holster on the night stand.

One size does NOT fit all!

One guy brazed a steel tab onto the manual safety lever on his P365 to make it easier to actuate.

I didn't have any problems actuating the manual safety lever on my P365X, but I found that the manual safety lever on the right side interfered with the way it fit into a holster, so I cut off the right side lever.

I had problems accessing the nearly recessed magazine release button so I added JB Weld epoxy to extend the height of the magazine release button.

Brazing a tab onto the manual safety lever would be the most permanent method, but also the most difficult.

I suppose you could also try vinyl dip.

But heat shrink tubing is easy. The polyolefin heat shrink tubing that you are using is nearly non-reactive to almost anything.
It might need periodic replacement with a nickel's worth of heat shrink tubing. But hey, you're a big spender and can afford it.

You might also consider trying heat shrink tubing with heat activated glue inside.

When carried no one will see that green tubing. Clever idea, I never use the one on my Plus, would have bought one without a safety but all the PC version LGS had in stock had one.

I haven't handled a Shield Plus with a safety but the older Shield safeties weren't tactable enough for me. I bought my Shield Plus sans safety.
Your mod looks fine, and I'd probably try it if I were determined to have a Shield with a safety.

I took the advice of @WheelGunMan and @Alllen Bundy and put some black shrink tubing, the kind with glue inside, on the thumb safety lever instead of the slime green stuff. It fits tighter and looks better. And it works even better. I think I spent $3 on a foot of the shrink tubing on ebay. This little 1/2" piece should last forever.

Let's just say that it will likely last a very long time. That heat shrink tubing is most likely made of cross-linked polyethylene, which is chemically close to inert, so cleaners are very unlikely to react with it. That heat shrink tubing is also suitable for direct burial. Not that I am recommending that you to bury your pistol. Maybe it you left your pistol on the windowsill, in direct sunlight, the heat shrink tubing would eventually become brittle and crack. If it get's a little scratched up and unsightly, no big deal to replace it.

Glad to see that you have found a cheap (12.5 cent) and easy fix for your issue. And being black in color, the fashion police now approve!

how do you get the whole piece over the safety? Do you put it on from the side and pull it across the safety from left to right, so that the back of the safety is also covered?

what is this shrink tubing with glue on the inside?

How to put it on: Look at the 1st picture above, with the green tubing. There's another piece cut and laying there on the gun. There's a cut-out that allows it to cover the front, but clears the part of the lever going inside the gun. Just slip it onto the lever from front to back. Warm it up and mash the ends down with your thumbnail while its still warm and soft. Here's the new black shrink tubing with the glue inside.

The original green shrink tubing didn't have that and it would wiggle on the safety lever a little. This new shrink just sticks to it, no wiggle. Also this tubing shrinks 3/1 and the green stuff only shrank 2/1. That make it even tighter. Much better.

I’ve been troubled by this for 8 years on my Gen 1 Shield. I’ll try it.
FYI, ANY modifications on the safety may expose you to liability in a SD/HD situation.
