What do you folks think of the Smith and Wesson Sigma in 9mm? The polymer frame makes me wonder if it's crap, but then I do know of some 'super-polymers' that even work for car and light truck springs...

The early ones were crap due to issues with the trigger mechanism self-destructing after a very short time period. Seems cleaning it with any liquid cleaner would cause the little felt spring dampener contained within the trigger spring to disintegrate eventually and the trigger spring would break under harmonic stress in just a few hundred rounds after the dampener "went south". I suspect that S&W has remedied this since that issue was occurring around the period of early 1994- late 1995, IIRC.
Although I am not a fan of the design (in fact, I dislike it greatly), a friend of mine owns one going on three years now that he seems to be quite satified with (even though he endures no small amount of razzing from me about his gun
) and has not seen any issues with it yet. It seems to function well and we shoot together quite a bit so I've seen quite a few rounds (several thousand) go "down range" through it personally.
I hardly think that the polymer frame (well proven technology at this point) is going to be the weak point in the system and it seems at first glance to be some type of polyamide resin (possibly a close variant of Nylon 6,6 similar to what the Glock uses?) so durability probably isn't an issue.
If it is what you want, get it and don't worry what others think of it. What makes you happy is what makes you happy.

I have the 40VE. In terms of reliability and quality, it's great at its price point. I have no doubt that when I pull the trigger its going to go boom. Earlier Sigmas created the bad reputation, but the current generation VE sigma has had very few reliability problems.
BUT, I absolutely hate the trigger. My local range requires the .40 and up calibers to shoot at 25 yards. At that distance, I can barely put my shots on the paper with the Sigma. Reliable it is, target gun it is not.

Use the search, its been beat to death. Except for the trigger the current production Sigmas are fantastic guns for the price. Older ones had issues.
If you are coming from Taurus revolvers the Sigma trigger is not so bad, if you are coming from a 1911 the trigger sucks indeed.
When it comes to reliability, its way too easy to spend a lot more and get less. I've a .40S&W Sigma as my "truck gun", $99 when I got my S&W M&P AR15 was too good a deal to pass up!

It is not a great gun but it has absolutely nothing to do with the polymer frame. The first generation Sigmas were crap. They were breaking pins and springs left and right. The new ones seem to be higher quality but they still have this 10 pound lawyer attached to the trigger. I say spend a little more and get the M&P. It is similar in design but twice the gun.
