Many of you already know this, but perhaps this will help spread the word to those who don't... the 40C is a really sweet little gun.

I've been carrying mostly various 1911's over the years but recently desired a little higher capacity in my carry guns. I acquired a Glock 29 (compact 10mm - 11 round capacity) which I dearly love even if it does feel like a block in the hand. (Perhaps it's the fact that it's 10mm and very compact that I love the most!) As wonderful as the G29 is, I wanted something a little more ergonomic that felt more comfortable in the hand than my G29 does. 10mm would be great, but I'd settle for forty. So I recently decided to check out the G27, XD40 compact, and M&P 40C.

My girlfriend and I went to my favorite toy shop and handled the G27 first... felt ok, not great though. Then the XD40 compact... felt a little better to hold than the G27, but the gun has a higher bore axis, felt top heavy and a bit too bulky in the slide for my liking. Neither of these did much for my girlfriend, and didn't excite me all that much either. Then we held the M&P 40C. Immediate smiles on both of our faces... VERRRY good first sign... how great the gun felt in our hands. Excellent balance, nice low bore axis, points perfectly and just feels great.

We went home, did some reading up on other forums, read some reviews; read about how soft-shooting the 40C is for a small, lightweight .40 caliber gun (most likely due to the low bore axis and designed springiness of the frame) and I decided I wanted a little more potency (40) rather than a little softer shooting (9mm) so I bought the 40C.

Now around 400 rounds of various ammo into it (mostly Speer 180 gr. Gold Dots), I couldn't be happier with the decision. This gun is stone reliable, accurate, wonderfully easy and comfortable to shoot, pure simplicity to shoot (point and pull the trigger), decent and steadily improving trigger feel, great durable finish (black melonite over stainless), and good capacity.

Beyond that, the gun is available without a mag safety, and without any locks. All USA designed and built. Comes from a company (Smith & Wesson) with a lifetime warranty and the best customer service in the industry. Comes with two versions of mag bases... one extended a bit in front for comfortable finger hold, the other with a flat bottom for minimizing size. Also comes with three different palm swell choices to fine tune the fit of the grip to your hand. This gun gets a big thumbs up from me. No doubt I will be buying some more M&P's down the road.

As an aside... my girlfriend saw the little cotton handcloths I have around the house (on my desk, nightstand, dresser top, computer workstation, etc.) for setting my guns on and decided I needed some "proper" gun rugs to put my guns on while they're out and around the house, so she came home with this beautiful little gun rug for my desk... seen here being put to use. She's a thoughtful and sweet woman!

If you're looking for a reliable, accurate, potent, small, lightweight, and affordable ($475 at my local toy store) defense carry gun with good capacity... this should be on your must-check-out list.

Great gun. Thanks for the info. and, your photo looks better than anything S&W has on their site!

I think that rug would look better with a Walther on it. I think it's the english look of it. I love my Full sized M&P 40, though, and wouldn't trade it.

Great gun, and a great photo! I also held one in a pawnshop and it took my wife and two buddies to get me out of there without buying it.

Not much you can do about the wife, but you can find new friends. :D Strike that...you need to find new friends.

Friends don't let friends leave gunshops without buying at least one gun. :p

M&P....Goooooood.

Excellent and concise review DHart!! I 100% agree with everything you said!! I owned a G27 and I traded it in on the M&P .40c. No regrets whatsoever!! I firmly believe that the only thing keeping most people from buying the M&P pistols, is just because they have not held and shot one yet. Once you do that, most of the time, I think you will buy it. I love my .40c. "A total winner", INDEED!!
Very nice picture also!! It is for now my desktop picture!!

I love my M&P40c as well. It is defiantly a great pistol. The only problem is the price of the mags right now (I want to get at least two more mags (the ones with the finger rest floorplates) for it). I sure wish M&P mags cost the same as Glock mags. Oh well. I'm going to get some Meps put on it also later on this year, I think. The M&P40 compact feels great in my hand!

I always enjoy your photography! It's also nice to see you on the M&P bandwagon. If you really want to make it sing, consider Dan Burwell's Standard Trigger Job: lighter and smoother trigger, with a short and distinct reset.

Thanks for the comments.

Ken... I love seeing your pics as well. And those pics of your EB EE with the black alumagrips just knocks my socks off... what a great gun and what great images you make! I've been contemplating doing the trigger job myself or sending it to Dan... so far, my trigger has gotten pretty nice with around 500 pulls. But I know the trigger job can make it just awesome!

Astute review and good choice. You are right on vs the XD. Glock isn't even on my radar.

I have one other gun ahead of this one to purchase and the MP 40c is next in the buy que. S&W hit a homer with this one.

Oh... as for the "gun rug"... they're originally intended as mouse pads, but make superb and elegant gun rugs... many designs available. Soon, I'll have four or five scattered about the house for my guns to hang out on. Available here: www.mouserug.com And I believe they're sold in stores like Borders as well.

"I owned a G27 and I traded it in on the M&P .40c. No regrets whatsoever!!"

In about two years and several thousand rounds get back to us on the "no regrets" thing.

Mythbuster: No doubt the M&P will be proving it's durability and longevity over the coming years... and no doubt the gun's rapid rise in popularity will mean that there will be a lot of them in service.

I'm confident in Smith & Wesson. I've used their service in the past with revolvers and was thrilled with how good they take care of service. A couple of years ago I bought a few twenty to thirty year old, USED S&W revolvers which had developed timing issues and S&W was quick to service and repair the guns with no interest nor concern whatsoever as to whether I was the original owner or not. The guns had probably changed hands a number of times over the years, but S&W fixed them right up quickly at no charge. That's awesome, lifetime warranty service! Should any problems arise with the M&P's, I'm confident that S&W's superb customer service and lifetime warranty will take very good care of things. At the very worst eventuality, which isn't likely, if one is unhappy with a gun for whatever reason, one can always just trade it in on something else! ;-)

I've been wanting one of these since I bought the M&P40 full sized. My local dealer finally has a distributor with them in stock, and I should have one by Friday. My experience with the full size, and now your review have me anxiously awaiting. :)

Thanks!

I wonder if I could trade off that short mag for another with the pinky rest. Hmmmmm.....

One more thumbs up for the M&P40 full size, Smith has hit a homerun.
They had to. If they wanted to stay in LE sales, they needed a duty pistol. Their all-steel pistol lineup was getting seriously dated, and their newest entries in it were...snoozerific. Same stuff, different decade. What was mediocre in 1995 was really tepid in 2005. The polymer-framed lineup was filled with the underwhelming S&W99 and the much-maligned Sigma.

Sure, they got some LE sales with their other guns, but they were on the verge of being completley overshadowed by Glock, HK, Sig Sauer, etc. They neded the M&P to work and sell. Up until the M&P came out, I had never handled a S&W autopistol that I actually liked. There were many that I found acceptable, but none that actually felt good in the hand. I remember thinking "Oh, great" when the Ordies said they were looking at YET ANOTHER S&W auto. "Can't we please just get this over with and get the Glock?" I asked. :uhoh:

But, yeah. Completely unexpectedly, S&W knocked one over the fricken fence.

Hmmm strong words that I totally agree with Mike, S&W semi-autos were the retarded guns in the back of the case, not wanted nor ever enjoyed.

Good to hear you like your M&P, along with everyone else here also.

What if any are the known issues with them?

Any rumblings on a .45 ACP compact from S&W???

Interesting that Crimson Trace has a laser out for the Full size M&P line:

But as of late have nothing for the compact:

I find that while not critical, a laser is a huge tool to help me shoot.

I don't think it's actually out yet. I don't mean to split hairs, as I know what you were getting at. But just wanted to point it out in case others tried to find one.

To my knowledge, they are due on the market around the middle of '07.

I can't wait. It's about the only way my M&P gets better!

MythBuster, I am willing to bet that in two years, I will still be just as happy as I am now. I know that if I have a problem, S&W will take care of me.
Right now, there is no denying that this gun shoots more accurately and has less felt recoil for me. All brands can and do break. There is more to a gun than a name!!

In lieu of a new thread to give a range report, I decided to resurrect this one. Now that I have gotten to the range with my 40c, I've found that DHart's review was spot on. I fired it along with my M&P40 full sized and my USP40. Although it was "snappier" than the two full sized, it was still awesome. I preferred the pinky rest magazine, which made it very easy to control. But even with the short magazine I found that if I use a two handed grip and pull in with my weak hand just a bit more, it still hit the target and reset very quickly for the next shot. This is one nifty ccw piece!

I Just Got My Mp40 Shot 100 Rounds Felt Good. But It Shot 1foot Low At 15tards . Has Any Body Had This Problem. Or Do I Need To Practs More. I Changed Grip Size And Help Grup Better.

That's my next purchase. Is the recoil assembly double or single spring? What is the recoil rod made of? Thank's for the great review, info and pic.
