I'd appreciate some input/opinions/experiences on how AWA's, EMF's, and Cimarron's SAA clones/replicas compare. I really like the looks (Turnbull's CCH) and the idea of the coil main spring in AWA's Ultimate 1873, but before laying out the money for one I'd like to know how the EMF & Cimarron offerings compare. Thanks.

Free bump for you.

I've got a couple that Turnbull did the color on but none of the three you mention. Interesting that AWA is jumping on the Turnbull bandwagon.

In my opinion you have Colt, USFA, and the rest. I wouldn't spend the USFA money for a Colt that is not a Colt, but that's me. Double ditto for the prettied up AWA. In the 'regular' clones, I think Cimarron and AWA are close quality wise (I have had excellent experience with Cimarron), and EMF is a little lower down the totem pole.
I am sure you will get some other different opinions.

Wish I could help , but also don't have any experience with them 3. I have a couple of Rugers and my Range buddy has a few Taurus Gauchos. As for colt and usfa they are out of my price range . Good luck, Bob

Cimarron is a Uberti AFAIK. I've got one, but not with a fancy finish. With a set of Wolff springs, it's a great SA.

I bought the Millenium (beadblast) version in .357 for $265 because I wanted a trail gun. It's a great shooter.

I figured that, if I really carried it in a holster with snake loads, a high-end finish would start looking more low-end soon enough.:)

CCH fades in the sun.

That said, the CCH I've seen on Ubertis lately is pretty. They make Beretta's Stampede as well. Is anything as nice as CCH done by Turnbull or his few peers (some of whom don't work on handguns at all)? Probably not.

Worth it? Depends what you want it for, and how much you want to pay for it. The high-end SAA's have excellent actions as well as finishes.

BTW it looks like Cimarron doesn't offer the charcoal blued finish, which is strikingly pretty.

Guns sold under the Uberti name come in this finish, as well as the others:

So do the Berettas.

I read somewhere (I think) that Armi San Marco renamed to AWA International and bought American Western now named AWA USA. If that circuitous tale is correct then AWA is Armi San Marco which isn't a bad thing. I believe they had in-house case color which makes me wonder why they'd pony up for DTR - it's got to be an outsized percentage of the price.

I don't even have conjecture on EMF.

The Cimarron, as already noted, is a Uberti built to more stringent than average specs. They seem to keep the local cowboys a happy lot.

The charcoal "bright blue" that AB posted is thought by some to actually be a nitre heat blue which wears in a big hurry. I might try it someday with a slathering of Renaissance wax just to see if it helps. It'd be a pretty spiffy finish if one could keep it.

DTR case color will wear - whoever answers the phone at Turnbull will take pains to tell you that - at least they did when I called. However, in the case of STI and Turnbull's own USFA the stuff is hit with violin lacquer and seems to wear well - mine aren't even a year old yet so it's not had much of a test.

I find case color to be an acquired taste. It started off looking like corrosion to me (<- blasphemy) but I'm warming up to it. The Turnbull carbona blue is also growing on me. I'm not certain it actually looks better than hot salt blue or simply seems so because it's different.

I didn't feel right giving this a second gratuitous "bump" so have posted unfounded rumor, gross speculation and personal prejudice. Hopefully Mr. March will be by to offer some insight before it scrolls off the bottom of page 1 again.
:D

Thanks for the helpful replies.

I already have a Longhunter USFA Rodeo, and I recently bought a Cimarron Thunderer (stainless 4-3/4" .357 Magnum). I'm very happy with both, but I'd like to get something with a nice blue/CCH finished. I think I'm going to get either a AWA Classic or Ultimate 1873. Is the Ultimate 1873 model worth the extra money (compared with their Classic 1873)?

Again, thanks.
