I'm having a rifle built for me on a Remington long action chambered in 30-06 that I've had for a while. This will be my version of a scout rifle / all around hunting rifle.
Apparantly, SAAMI specs have the throat of the barrel so deep that in order to seat the bullet out far enough to touch or almost touch the lands the C.O.L will be so long that I won't be able to fit the cartridges in the magazine (using reloads of course). I have the option of ordering a custom reamer that will shorten the throat and make it to where the bullets when seated to the recommended depth will be substantially closer to the lands, or even touching if I want, than they would be if using a standard SAAMI reamer.
My initial thoughts are that this would be a good idea and increase my accuracy potential even if using factory loads.
Any reason why I shouldn't? Only about $150 more as the smith said he would split the cost of the reamer with me. My primary loads will be with 165-168gr. bullets with maybe some occasional 180gr loads. However, I don't want to prohibit myself from using 200gr. loads if the opportunity should arise.
