Sad Story

At several airports I've seen a little self-service kiosk near the security station where you can mail the knife to yourself. In fact, the TSA guys will point you to it. Once saved me two SAKs when both the wife & the kid forgot to take them out of their backpacks.

smartknives.com does a pretty good business reselling all kinds of TSA confiscated SAKs and Leathermans.

TSA, pardon my ignorance but has anyone ever hijacked a plane full of armed passengers? Instead of taking pen knives, and leathermen, all passengers should be issued a Gladius, or simular blade for each flight. That and post security waterbottles for 4 or 5 bucks, smells like war profittering to me.

conwict, love is a many splendored thing for sure but honesty to me is more important than a relationship and part of that honesty is accepting me for who I am and I am a gun enthusiast and knife lover and I carry both daily.

I'd have to stand on that ground when I got there (hopefully never have to start dating again thanks to the perfect woman... can ya tell she's reading over my shoulder) but if I did I may even leave the woman behind over my knives/guns

Actions speak louder than words and the idea that you lost a prized possession over her may be a huge thrill for her at that moment but I personally have had some of my knives longer than I have known most people.

In my life and they have never tried to stab me in the back without a person attached to the handle.

I FedExed knives to myself once from one of those kiosks. Money well spent since the value of the knives exceeded the cost of the service by an order of magnitude.

OTOH, there aren't too many such services available anywhere sitting outside of an entertainment venue (unless you just get lucky and spot a FedEx kiosk or Kinkos across the street). Having the presence of mind to turn around to take a couple of minutes to stash said item out of sight of the entrance to the venue is a better than surrendering it to gain entrance. Just hope you pick a good spot and hope the security folks, or anyone else, doesn't spot your hiding place.

As to breaking my own property rather than letting someone steal it, it depends upon your priorities.

Security or Legalized Robbery

I am currently in Afghanistan with the US Army. The security screening at the airfield we fly out of is run by the Brits. Recently they have been taking anything and everything off of military and contractors that in their opinion might be illegal or non-issue. A friend of mine who is a Canadian CIVPOL had a Marine Kabar taken out of his checked baggage (caught on x-ray). He was told it was a Marine knife and was not issued to him. Didn't matter if it was legal or whether you can buy them at any knife shop - it was taken because it was in their opinion not issued to him. They know you are not going to miss a flight or hang around to file a formal complaint.

I went hunting one weekend with my cousin. I always carried my Glock 22 with me back then as my CCW. I went home that night and went to bed woke up the next morning and than it hit me that I had no idea where the pistol was. I checked all of my gear and my vehicle but it was no where to be found. I gave my cousin a call and he checked his SUV but he could not find it either. I finally decided to go to his house and we took literally everything out of his car but it was no where to be found. I even drove back to the place that I went hunting and checked all over the woods. I finally gave up and called the police station to report it as missing. Almost one month later to date I got a phone call from my cousin saying that he found it in his truck. It was just sitting right under neath the back seat in plain view where we had both checked probable half a dozen times. Still don't know to this day how it got there or how we missed it.

hso, I was just suggesting a third possibility of giving it to someone who was a third party.

In hindsight i should have found a good hiding place for it, and believe me i wish had had done that. And to hso, I think I will go out today and buy another of the same, I just loved that knife.

I had something similar happen except that I just lost my favorite Boker Stockman. It fell out while I was wearing a loose pocketed dress pants. I purchased an exact replacement but it still didnt "fill the gap". Probably because mine was stag and you cant exactly replicate that. But the steel didnt sharpen as nice either even though it was the same steel type (440c). Hopefully you will marry that girlfriend or you will be REALLY pissed!

conwict,

I'm not usually that good an instant judge of character, but if some "deserving" security guy can be "gifted" with it I suppose some other stranger can as well.

Back before CC permits and reciprocity, I went to a big gun show in Denver with my NAA .22 LR mini revolver in my pants pocket. Didn't pay attention going in. Ready to leave, I realized there are airport style walk-through metal detectors at the exit! Manned by uniformed Denver police officers. Okay, now what? I seriously considered dumping the pistol in a trash can, as I had no desire to be arrested for carryning a cncealed weapon. Luckily, I knew a vendor from my home town. He volunteered to walk the gun out for me with his vendor ID. Apparently they had the metal detector set on "stun" as it didn't go off. I learned to pay more attention.

When I reported for MEPS four years ago, I had a Spyderco Manix and three other knives in my backpack that I'd forgotten were there. MEPS was in a federal building. They were confiscated and some rent-a-cop is carrying $300 of my knives.

While I agree with your sentiment, I do have to point out one thing.

Nidal Malik Hasan

I counter that arguement with the THOUSANDS of loyal, competent soldiers and sailors currently and formerly serving in the militaries of ourselves and our allies....

...or should the names "George Hennard" or "John Allen Muhammad" be enough for us to give up our 2nd Amendment rights?....

Both points well taken.

I do not have a lot of things I get insulted about but a TSA searches are at the top of my list.

I am, the one you want on a plane if it goes bad.

We can spend millions on a watch list. How about an OK to fly list.

I went to a 'dubya' [Bush] rally when he ran for the second time. I had my P-38 can opener on my key ring. Guard said I couldn't take it in. I said I have had this thing for 20 plus years. Sorry was his responce. So I stepped away to where there were some flowers. I descretly hid it in the flower bed. After the rally I went to get it and it was still there.
